The Aggies found themselves in a dogfight Wednesday evening at Reed Arena as the Rice Owls rolled into College Station and shot lights out to hang with the 18th-ranked Aggies. Despite the Owls making a shool-record 15 three-pointers, the A&M was able to rally late for a six-point victory, 82-76.

Anriel Howard led the Aggies in scoring in the contest, shooting an impressive 10-13 from the field on her way to recording a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. But it wasn' the A&M offense that was the story on the night, it was the defense. Or lack therof.

"Our defense was horrible the whole night. We made a couple of plays, but whether we were in man or we were in zone, we didn't understand switching and we didn't understand how to guard the three-point shot," said head coach Gary Blair on his teams defensive effort.

Howard rebounded from a subpar performance on Tuesday night against Prairie View to score 23 points against the Owls.

The three point shot was the focal point of the Rice offensive attack as they went 15-27 from beyond the arc. Redshirt sophomore Erica Ogwumike was the Owls leading scorer on the night. She shot 3-5 from beyond the arc in her 26-point, five assist performance.

With the game tied at 64 and six minutes remaining in the game, the Aggies turned to freshman point guard Chennedy Carter. Carter would score the Aggies next three baskets as well as a defensive to steal to give the Aggies a lead which they never relinquished.

Carter would score 11 fourth quarter points to finish with 17 on the night.

Blair was very thankful for the Aggie faithful in attendance on Wednesday night. "Thank heavens our fans didn't give up on us even though sometimes we had given up on ourselves," he commented postgame. He added, "If we're on the road, we lose this game."

The 12th man will be needed once again this weeknend when the Aggies return to action at Reed Arena as the No. 11 West Virginia Mountaneers come town. Sunday's game is scheduled to tip at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
