Farmers prove too much for Plowboys in Omaha Cup finale, 5-1
The Farmers won the fifth and final game of the Omaha Cup Friday night, defeating the Plowboys, 5-1, at Olsen Field.
Michael Helman got the scoring started in the bottom of the first as he blasted a triple off the wall in deep left-center field, and Braden Shewmake drove him in with an RBI later in the inning.
Stephen Kolek was effective and efficient on the mound for the Farmers, scattering two hits over three scoreless innings of work.
No more runs were scored until the fifth, when Allonte Wingate led off with a single and scored on an error. Cole Bedford hit a groundball to third, and Mason Corbett threw the ball away, allowing Wingate to score from second.
The Plowboys cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth as they scratched a run across off freshman Jack Conlon on an RBI single by Cam Blake, but the Farmers answered right back with a two-run double by George Janca. Janca blasted one off the base of the wall in deep left-center, and Zach Deloach scored from first on a bang-bang play at home.
The Farmers added another run in the bottom of the seventh as Will Frizzell drove home Bedford with an RBI single.
Mitchell Kilkenny allowed three hits and one run in his three innings of work for the Plowboys, striking out four and walking none. Asa Lacy and Christian Rua each threw two solid innings in relief.
In all, the Farmers won four of the five game of the fall World Series.
