Texas A&M began their annual Omaha Cup series to wrap up fall ball this afternoon at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park. A few familiar faces, along with a few new ones, impressed as the Farmers defeated the Plowboys in game one, 13-4.

Senior left-hander Kaylor Chafin took the mound for the Farmers in game one and started right where he left off during his excellent junior campaign. In his five innings of work during the game, Chafin struck out five while only walking one, allowing five hits and only one unearned run.

His counterpart, junior Stephen Kolek did not counter with a similar performance for the Plowboys. Kolek surrendered seven runs on nine hits and one walk in just four innings of work.

The main problem for Kolek early was the one-two punch of Cole Bedford and Justin Frizzell in the middle of the Farmer lineup. The duo went a combined 6 for 10 at the plate Wednesday, scoring five runs and driving in six. Bedford also hit a home run in the second inning off of Kolek.

Among the new faces that impressed was JUCO transfer Michael Helman. The junior infielder scored three runs for the Farmers in game one, including a triple in the bottom of the first that allowed Braden Shewmake to bat with a runner in scoring position. Shewmake did what Aggies have become accustomed to in his short time in the Maroon & White, driving Helman in with a single to left and an early 1-0 lead.

The bright spot for the Plowboys came in the form of another new face, Oklahoma transfer Chris Andristos. Andristos had a slow game for the most part, but showed off his raw power in the ninth when he took Landon Miner deep to straight away center on a ball that he didn’t catch all of. It may be a sign for things to come from the big right-hander from the Woodlands.

The Aggies will return to action tomorrow afternoon for a game two of the Omaha Cup. First is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. from Olsen Field. Admission is free to the public.
