Lost Lettermen: Trailer

After many years of playing on the club level, the 1981 Aggie Men's Soccer Club was elevated to Varsity status by the Texas A&M Athletic Department. That season, the squad went undefeated in Southwest Conference league play and was seemingly on track toward national prominence in the sport, but athletic department officials thought otherwise.

Much to the chagrin of the coaches and players, the program was relegated back to club status prior to the 1982 season. Lost Lettermen takes a look at who played on that Aggie Soccer team, and explores the reasons why they only played on the Varsity level for one season.

Produced by TexAgs Production Group, Lost Lettermen is set to release this fall for TexAgs Premium subscribers.

Wow...I am looking forward to this. Now my meeting makes sense. It was about 1986 or maybe before...can't remember the exact year. My Dad became the Systems Treasurer at A&M and I attended a dinner function with him where I met Dr. Frank Vandiver. I remember our talking about soccer, how I was playing varsity for our high school team and I remember Dr. Vandiver telling me, "...that was one decision I regret the most....pulling the plug on the A&M soccer team." I don't remember anything else of that conversation and I did not think more of it for many years. But often on TexAgs I have mentioned the conversation and no one has said anything about it. Now I know what he meant because I had never heard that A&M ever had a men's soccer team.

Also very interesting is Telmo Franco. I met him in 1989/1990. A new indoor soccer team (semi-pro) was being created to play in the indoor facility on the NW side of Houston. Jones Rd near Grant Road. Where the Met is now. The team was called the Houston Express and Coach Franco was the head coach. I tried out and made the team, still have the letter from him. However, I decided to continue my sophomore year at A&M and not stay home and play on the team. I went to their game against the Dallas Sidekick (Tatu's team). It wasn't much longer before the team folded.

Can't wait to see this! Thank you!

Randy, thanks for your post. It's been a real honor to get to hear the stories from some of the players and coaches firsthand. I hope that you and other soccer fans here on the soccer forum will really appreciate this short film. It's a fascinating story that needs to be told. It's amazing to me that this story has somehow slipped through the cracks of A&M athletics history.

One of the most fascinating elements of the story is that the ending has yet to be written. Stay tuned!
