Hoops Thoughts: Aggie women end skid, take care of business

The women’s basketball team bounced back after two losses with two victories. It was nice to see a team who was a little disappointed after dropping some games they maybe shouldn’t have lost show their resilience and take care of business. These were two games that the Aggies should have won and they did, handily.

Offense: The Aggies like to use their fast pace of play against their opponents. This continues to be the staple under Coach Blair. In the half-court setting, the theme for success has been productive post play. The inside-out game is going to be very important if this team wants to make a run in the post season. Khaalia Hillsman needs to be consistent in her performance, scoring in double digit figures if the Aggies want to compete at a high level. Against A&M-Corpus Christi there was a good inside presence, but the production faded off in the second half. Luckily this didn’t hurt them versus a team like Corpus Christi.

Defense: On the defensive side of the ball, the Aggies didn’t look too bad. They had much better ball pressure which led to turnovers and offense for them. They showed an aggressive hedge on ball screens this week and even trapped some. This was the perfect game to implement these wrinkles on defense. The ball pressure and aggression was great, flustering the ball handler. However, on occasion the opposing team was able to pass out of the trap or hedge and get the ball into the paint really easily. To prevent this from happening, they need to rotate out of the trap much quicker. Something else that needs to be noted is on occasion A&M will take a possession off and give up easy buckets. This will be a problem when they get into SEC play where every possession is going to count.
Facing a team like Corpus Christi, Coach Blair was able to extend some minutes to his bench. This is vital for A&M’s success over the course of the season.

Bench:
Facing a team like A&M-CC, Coach Blair was able to extend some minutes to his bench. This is vital for A&M’s success over the course of the season. During the first half of the game there was some drop off in production from the starters. After settling in during the second half, they ran away with the game. It’s going to be a long season, girls are going to get banged up, worn out, and fatigued. If the bench can prevent a major drop off in play from the starters, that’s going to make a difference in how far this team goes.

Overall: It was a good week for the women’s basketball team, taking wins when they should. They were able to try new things and experiment on the defensive side of the ball, which could be very helpful in the future. Coach Blair got his bench good minutes and hopefully built some confidence there. It’s always good to take games like these, work on yourself, and watch film afterwards to see what works and what doesn’t.
