Hoops Thoughts: A&M women stay perfect, beat ACU, Little Rock

Here are a few thoughts on the Aggies Women’s basketball team and their recent victories.

Defense:
A&M proved this week to be a second-half team. They were able to raise their intensity and turn defense into offense. The Aggies win over ACU showed a tremendous improvement on the defensive side of the ball. They still gave up middle drives, but not as often. The most glaring thing about the Aggies' defense is their active hands and how many deflections they had. Being able to get your hands on the ball flusters offenses and disrupts the flow of the offenses. This was a better defensive performance by the Aggies, and they were able to turn the opposing team’s mistakes into points.

Offense: The Aggies saw their first real look against a zone defense this week and looked pretty good. The three-ball wasn’t as effective as it has been in games past, but that didn’t matter. The Ags were still able to get the ball into the paint, and Khaalia Hillsman took full advantage. The inside presence for the Aggies was in full force against the zone. If they are able to combine this with their three-point game, they’re going to be very hard to stop. They also implemented their fast-paced game and scored a lot in transition, not even allowing the other team to set up their defense.

Rebounding: Ask any coach, and they’ll tell you how important rebounding is to the outcome of the game. The Aggies were beastly on the boards on both ends of the floor. Anriel Howard showed her crazy athletic ability, grabbing 14 boards in the win over ACU. This is a huge stat for A&M. Being able to out-rebound their opponents gives them an advantage – defensively, not allowing any more opportunities to score, and offensively, keeping possessions alive. Offensive rebounds are hard on an opposing defense and give the Aggies a greater opportunity to score.

Early on, Danni Williams showed to be a top scorer, but wasn't as explosive this past week. The good thing is that it didn’t seem to matter.
Scoring: This year’s team has proved that they haven’t missed the scoring of the Courtney's and Jordan Jones. They have been able to show they can spread the scoring throughout the line-up. Early on, Danni Williams showed to be a top scorer, but wasn't as explosive this past week. The good thing is that it didn’t seem to matter.

The Aggies have consistently had multiple players in double-digits. If this can become a theme for the rest of the season, the Ags are going to be just fine and won’t need to count on one player to score the majority of their points.

Overall: It was a good week for A&M. You can’t complain about being 5-0. There have been a couple of games that the Aggies started off kind of slowly, but they have found ways to win. They’ve made adjustments at halftime and really pulled away late in games. Finding ways to win is always a good trait for any team. A&M has done what they’ve needed to in order to come way victorious so far and has shown improvements along the way. It’s still early, but so far I like what I see.
