Jackie Sherrill shares his thoughts on Texas AD, A&M moving forward

Key quotes from Jackie Sherrill interview

“The underlying story in Austin is very simple. With the administration, you have a board of regents, then the president, AD and then the coaches. That is the flow of the line. There’s no question that the new president and the AD were not on the same page. In saying that, what probably broke the straw was the president and the AD having a conversation, then the AD says  some things, a day later, that are completely different than what they talked about. Now, all of a sudden, as a president, you have board members calling you very upset. So, the pressure goes from the top down. This is all second hand, because I don’t work for them, but it is very substantial second hand."

"It was a lot of little things, like taking the coaches off the training table and not allowing them to be around the players when that is the most relaxing time for coaches to be with them. It is taking something that really doesn't matter, money wise, but it more about him having power over everybody. That didn't sit well with a lot of people. Texas is a very political university, where you wear a tie that you have to flip every five minutes. It’s not about saying the right thing, but saying the correct thing. That’s basically what happened.”

“Mack Brown will end up being the AD at Texas, but he will not take the job as long as Charlie Strong is there. You aren't going to come in and be the boss of the guy who replaced you. Mack is too politically savvy to do that. There is no question they have asked him to be the AD, but knowing Mack Brown, I’m sure that would be the conversation he had to the president.”

“If you go back through the history af A&M, all the way back to the PUF fund, Texas allowed A&M to get a third of that. The reason was that Texas thought A&M would be underneath the Texas system one day anyway. So for all those days, it was a big brother, little brother situation. I’m not saying I’m smarter, I’m not. But I did have a feel that when we started not following Texas, because everything Texas did, Texas A&M had to do. When we started changing that mindset and saying A&M is as good as Texas, we’ll go and do our own thing. That is what you are seeing right now with A&M going to the SEC, building a stadium that nobody else has, bringing in the law school and med school, A&M is on a journey by itself. You look at Mays Business school, it is already top five in the world. When you look at what A&M has done, they are no longer Texas’ little brother. We’re as good or better.”

“It won’t be ten years (for A&M to be a perennial contender) because of the recruiting. On the team right now, you could say which group needs the most help, it’s the linebackers. Then you go down and say you need more dominating people inside on the defense. The best group of people we have right now in terms of making plays, and talent is the receivers. Josh Reynolds is as good a receiver as anyone has. Then, you go down to Kirk, Speedy and Jones, you have a group of receivers that nobody else has.”

“I don’t know if we are as good as Alabama, right now, up front on both sides of the ball. You win in the SEC because of your linemen production. The next one would be linebacker production. When you look at the teams that have won championships, Missouri got there because of their defensive people that could create pressure on the quarterback. Same with Alabama. You aren't going to get there unless you are better than everybody else up front.”

“Oh yes, the tight end is impressive. The freshman tackle is impressive as well in Koda Martin. What happens, when you get young kids and develop them on both sides of the ball, they may not play a lot, but by the time they are juniors, they have played a lot of football. You win because you have those upperclassmen, sprinkled in with some sophomores. Very rarely do you have a freshman come in that can play at that level. It takes a lot longer to play up front than any other position.”

I hope they read this in Austin. They still whine about Jackie's success.

He is very close to Mack & many other powerful UT people. His daughter worked in Mack' office at one time.
