My notes from the weekend
I was at three games this weekend. Thursday was DeSoto's blowout win over Denton Guyer. Friday was Parkway vs. Pearl (MS) in Shreveport. Saturday was Bishop Dunne vs. Brentwood Academy. Here's a few thoughts and notes.********The toughest thing I had to see this weekend was Terrace Marshall down on the field of Independence Stadium with a significant and season ending injury. It is something you never want to see and the fact that it happened the weekend after Justin Rogers suffered the same fate made it seem even more surreal. Marshall went to the hospital and had surgery that night, and the medical report is a fractured fibula and a dislocated ankle. https://twitter.com/meoshia_brazzle/status/906580736479842305On the field, it was pretty clear from the first series that it was going to be a tough night for Marshall. When he was targeted passes were underthrown. Even the screens were off target and it was a night it was either going to be a screen or a deep jump ball. After the game, I felt he was still the best pure talent I saw this weekend. He's a big receiver, capable of explosive plays, and this injury is merely a speed bump. He will graduate in December and while Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida State, LSU, and Texas are his top five, the feel I got was LSU. ***************Wide receivers had a particularly strong weekend for me.La'Vontae Shenault had the catch of the weekend with his leaping TD in the back of the endzone against Denton Guyer. He is not as fluid an athlete as Marshall, but he is big and athletic and he makes plays when it counts. That TD reception gave DeSoto a 14-6 lead and helped propel the Eagles to a 42-13 win.Shennault may be the biggest prospect of that game, but 2018 WR Jamal Brown stole the show on offense and special teams with his dynamic runs. Think KD Nixon light. That's not meant to be a knock on Brown, he's just not as thick as Nixon was, but he's definitely just as capable of making the same type of explosive plays. He finished with three touchdowns and 119 yards receiving on 5 receptions. 2019 WR Bryon Hanspard is another size-challenged prospect but his speed was quick to standout. He averaged 35 yards a reception. Bishop Dunne's Marquez Beason was the most dynamic guy I saw this weekend. His change of direction and acceleration were unmatched. I would like to see a better effort when the ball is not going his way, but when the ball is in his hands he makes a minimum of two or three guys completely miss. He is currently No 18 in the TexAgs.com 2019 Texas Top 75. The Aggies made his top 12, but he and Brian Williams say they will play together in college and there is a lot of Texas Longhorn smoke right now. ************Mark Denton Guyer 2020 DL Grant Mahon (6-3, 260) down as a prospect to watch. Guyer coaches have been high on him since the spring and he was a bright spot for the Wildcats on Thursday night. I mentioned him a few times during that game and I think he has a chance to be a top 30 prospect in the state in his class. He's definitely one of the top pure DLs I've seen in that class. ************Bishop Dunne 2019 S Brian Williams is one guy I wanted to watch closely. He was one of the first 2019s to receive a scholarship offer, and he has been among the top 5 and even No. 1 in the rankings ever since. Last fall against Prestonwood I saw him grab a few INTs and make some physical plays so I have seen him make plays. I've seen him be good, but I was hoping to see a little more out of him on Saturday. He had a tough day against Brentwood Academy. He slipped and allowed a first down reception early in the first quarter. He was a bit tentative coming down hill, and he got was on the business end of a TD run. He did have a forced fumble and a fumble recovery late in a tight game, but overall I would say the first game of the year was nnot his best day. That is one ranking I will be taking a good long look at before our next eval meetingAs I mentioned above there seems to be a lot of Texas talk surrounding Beason and Williams and that would be my prediction for both. I also think it is worth mentioning Williams visited Texas twice this summer.

TexAgs Spring Tour: DeSoto and Duncanville
It was a full day for me in South Dallas, after my morning at Lancaster and SOC, I made the trip over to Duncanville and DeSoto. Some of you may be wondering why I stopped in at both schools since there are not any current Texas A&M targets, well these schools have quite a bit of talent in the younger classes. And no, while I was in DeSoto I did not get the lowdown on what is going on. Today, was a pretty normal practice. The coaches coached, and the players played. With that out of the way, I'll go ahead and say that I've been sleeping on the Green twins. Michigan grabbed a couple of good ones in Gemon Green and German Green. These guys have some great length and overall athleticism and have already had a big offseason on the camp circuit. Arkansas DB commit Byron Hanspard did not work out today. He seems solidly committed to the Razorbacks. Recent Colorado commit Josh Jynes leads a young, but talented, offensive line group. 2019 Evan Henry (6-3, 305) has a 6-9 wingspan and has a nice build. Look for him to start seeing the interest pick up this spring and summer as college coaches get a chance to see him work. 2020 OT Donovan Ford (6-3, 275) will also turn some heads this spring. He's on track to be one of the top OLs in his class right now.Wide receiver has a few names to know. The biggest potential Texas A&M target is 2019 La'Vontae Shenault. He's the little brother of Colorado signee Laviska Shenault and he already holds scholarship offers from TCU and Colorado. He has a big body like his brother. He's 6-1, 180 right now, is not afraid to get physical, has good feet. Another 2019 is Bryon Hanspard. He's a smallish guy right now at 5-9, 140, but he has great bloodlines and I was told he is the hardest working kid in the program. He's not there yet, but keep an eye on him as a slot possibility in that 2019 class. 2020 WRs Paul Pickens (6-0, 165) and Lawrence Arnold (6-3, 175) also have people talking. On the defensive front 2019 DTs Viramontes Pippens (6-0, 294) and Devere Levelston (6-4, 250) are already drawing attention. Pippens is a guy I liked when I saw DeSoto this fall. He's not the tallest, but he has some power in the middle. Levelston is a guy I'm getting to know about but the coaches like him and that length and frame is always nice to see. *************Out in Duncanville I really wanted to get a good look at that 2020 class. It was my first time seeing Ja'Quinden Jackson in person and he definitely looks the part. The guys were not working out but he is definitely as advertised from an eyeball stand point. He already has offers from Oklahoma State and Texas Tech and is ranked No. 3 in the TexAgs 2020 rankings. He's a guy to watch at both quarterback and wide receiver. Also in Duncanville's 2020 class is S Chris Thompson. He's another potential national level recruit for the Panthers. 2019 Jordan Phillips is a big OG prospect at 6-4, 320, and 2019 Tre'Shone Devones brings some nice size at corner at (6-0, 160)The 2018 group has some prospects but I don't see the Aggies getting involved right now. DE Marcus Mosley was the DL MVP at the Opening regional in Dallas and holds offers from McNeese St, UCA, Arkansas State, Bowling Green, and ULL. DT Terrance Newman has also picked up offers from UNT and McNeese and LB Keyshawn Johnson also holds several.

TexAgs National Average Rating

The TexAgs National Average Rating is a proprietary formula that calculates an industry-wide aggregate rating for each recruiting prospect. The formula includes publicly listed grades, scores, ratings and rankings by national recruiting services, along with a TexAgs rating. Combining the data provides a rating for each prospect, which is then normalized to fit the TexAgs Rating 100-point scale.

The intent of this rating is to provide TexAgs readers with a comprehensive snapshot of how individual prospects rank nationally.

Staff Predictions

The predictions represent which school each staff member believes will ultimately sign the recruit, and the confidence meter represents his level of certainty in that outcome.

Example #1

If the predicted school is Texas A&M and confidence is set to “High”, then the staff member is saying “I believe that this recruit will ultimately sign with Texas A&M and I feel very certain about that.”

Example #2

If the predicted school is “Alabama” and confidence is set to “Low,” then the staff member is saying “I believe that this recruit will ultimately sign with Alabama, but I’m not very certain about that.”
