The first day of pool play is in the books, and tomorrow Division II and Division III will crown a champion. Let's dive into the first day's action for a few thoughtsThree big standoutsTE Baylor Cupp, Brock - The 6-foot-6, 235-pound tight end lived up to the billing. A week after having his wisdom teeth out he did not skip a beat. He had somewhere around 7 TDs on the day and he was as physically imposing a player as we will see this weekend. It is safe to say he is underrated even by the TexAgs rankings right now. Even Liucci's 44 may need a re-do lolWR Jay Wilkerson, Midlothian Heritage (2020) - Wilkerson has been a yardage and reception machine at Heritage for the last couple of years, and today he would not be denied. His hands, his awareness, and his body control were three things that jumped off the charts to me. He made several tough catches on the day.WR Kennedy Lewis, Melissa - Lewis has been a threat on offense and defense for Melissa and today he has a solid build for a receiver and he can climb the ladder. He had a big spring and saw his offer list grow because of it. He'll be one to watch at TCU.A few thoughts-Goodness gracious Baylor Cupp - I would say he exceeded all expectations today. His size and build checked the first boxes. His hands were very reliable throughout the day and he came up clutch in several spots. He was the best overall athlete I saw out there today. He played a huge role in Brock's offense, and he ran hard when he was not getting the ball. One more thing, Cupp is not a very outspoken guy. He's pretty low key. He likes to go about his business, give the ball back to the ref and get to the sidelines. Make no mistake though, he was a dominant force out there.-Langston Anderson is one fast dude - I did not see a faster guy off the line today. He hits top speed in a hurry and he can cut without dropping a gear. The speed may draw you in, but he also has a very strong lower body.-Whittington in limited action - Texas commitment Jordan Whittington was the highest rated player in action today, and he impressed in his time on the field. He spent his time on offense and he showed some very nice flashes. -Melissa is my favorite to win Division II - The trio of Brendon Lewis, JaBray Young, and Kennedy Lewis are imposing and definitely FBS guys, but they have some playmakers and they put up a lot of points today. Heritage would be my second choice.-Gunter gets the nod in Division III - I will be honest I did not catch much of Gunter in action but I heard reports they were doing some work out there. They scored 42 points in all of their games and Braiden Clopton and Dylan Jantz are tough to contain.Recruiting notes-There really is not much to say about Brock TE Baylor Cupp. He committed to Texas A&M and he has not looked back since. -Midlothian Heritage WR Langston Anderson released a top ten of Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Kansas State, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Texas, Texas Tech, and Washington State, but just before that there was a lot of talk about him making a trip to College Station for camp. He was not able to make it to camp but he continues to keep in touch with coach Linguist. He is trying to make a visit happen after the dead period and if something were to happen and the Aggies were to offer you can put Texas A&M high on his list. I think it will take a few things happening before he comes into play, but it is definitely something to keep an eye on. -Midlothian Heritage 2020 WR Jay Wilkerson received an offer from Tulsa earlier this month and I think we'll continue to see that list grow. UNT, SMU, and Arkansas are a few schools showing a lot of interest, and today he was sporting an Arkansas hat. -Melissa 2020 RB Ja'Bray Young holds offers from Boston College, Kansas, SMU, Syracuse, and Virginia Tech. He's trying to get to camps at TCU, Syracuse, and Virginia Tech. The Hokies are showing the most interest and he's trying to get out to visit in July.-Melissa 2020 QB Brendon Lewis saw his offer list grow this spring and he has been a standout at several camps. TCU, Mississippi State, Missouri, and SMU are showing the most interest right now. He plans to visit Missouri soon. He likes the coaches, and the family atmospheres around all of those schools. Right now he says he's focused on taking Melissa as far as possible.
