Needed a rapid covid test for an international trip. Went to the pop-up urgent care place since they advertised rapid test turnaround and were relatively close by. Long story short, just got a bill for a few hundred bucks each for me and my wife totaling close to $600 for exams plus the cost of the covid tests. I just wanted a test, told them why I needed it yet they came in and listened to my lungs asked why I was there, took my temp, etc. I assumed all of that was SOP for the test but also had an inclination that this was going to be an issue.

Love how no pricing or anything was discussed during my appt before or after. Never assume anything. Aren't these places getting govt kickbacks for these tests? Why the need for the exam? Just to milk my visit? I told them up front I didn't have any symptoms and needed it for a trip only.

Capitalism. US health care perfect. Do not question. No free lunch. System works. Very easy to understand if you just spend 3 hours per week. Just gather EOB's bills, deductibles, out of pocket receipts, coinsurance payments, separate the in-network and out of network charges, check to see if specialists are in network, and make sure individual, family, prescription, orthodontic, eyewear, and preventative items are billed, but watch overages for cards on file. Easy. I do it from 4-7 a.m. every Tuesday, with a little follow up on Saturday night. People just want everything for free.

Yes 94chem capitalism is the reason OP is forced to be tested for a minor virus before travel and capitalism is the reason for excessive fees unrelated to his purpose for visit.

Such a lazy view to take. You left the "crony" off your capitalism.

Capitalism is not at play here.

Was it Next Level Urgent Care? They will try to charge you for an office visit, but if you let them bill your insurance, you won't owe anything.

Capitalism would require transparent pricing at point of service. That didn't exist here.

Oh dear. He thinks the healthcare system remotely resembles capitalism. Bless your heart.

I sense that there is a lot of corruption going on within the medical community with this stuff. After my wife had the virus quick test, we discovered through our insurance company that the testers had charged over $1,200 for an office visit, new patient fee, and a test. The wife never set foot in their office. She took the test at a senior living facility in order to have access. Our insurance company apparently paid the fee they are obligated to pay. We contacted the provider and were told to not worry about it, we would not be billed for the remainder. Really? Is the government paying for it? Or they taking it off their taxes as write-offs? My senses tell me you don't bill someone for something and not expect some sort of payment/credit.

It should have been impossible for my post to have been taken seriously. We live in interesting times.

Without directly saying it is sarcasm (like using the emoji above), any pun or sarcasm or joke is hard to seriously deliver in this medium.

Saying that, in light of your past posting history I took your post as being very sarcastic. Good job (except for not letting us know, directly...)

That's called fraud. The insurance company should not pay them for a visit that never occurred. My guess is they will though.

An office visit includes exam and history- from your post it sounds like they did that.

When I wanted just a test I went to a testing center not an urgent care or ER.

I just made sure I got all my testing done before December 31st. They could start charging me after that. Perfectly logical. Easy peasy.

I needed a rapid test because we only had a 48 hour window to get and show results. None of the other places i called offered a quick turnaround. I wouldn't have minded if they would have been upfront with their services and billing and given me a fair chance to accept/decline. I called and told them what I needed and unbeknownst to me I got signed up for a bundle package.

Yeah it is very frustrating and ripe with abuse (IMO I don't have actual data to prove that).

I agree they could have just tested you as an asymptomatic patient who needs it for work/travel, but they did perform a history & physical so they are within legal rights to charge for that. It doesn't mean they should but I doubt you will have any luck challenging the billing in this scenario. The entire system is a disaster and would be much easier if we went more upfront cash prices with HSA but that is not the way the government wanted us to go some 7 or 8 years ago.
