Carol was older (75) and lived in rural Illinois. Small town of a couple of hundred. She had a "care checker" that would go by her house to ensure everything was good with her. Turns out that this care checker didn't believe in COVID or practice any non traditional hygiene practices. Carol got sick and went downhill fast. Within 2 days of being admitted to the hospital she was gone.

It's a cluster now. My wife's immediate family in the area of her aunt is blaming the heath care provider. The care checker is supposedly sick but refusing to take a test. With that said, a bunch of her rural Illinois relatives didn't really practice social distancing or above normal sanitation practices and would often go to check in and be with Carol as well. Most of them have taken a test and have come back negative though. I don't know if it's misinformation, uninformed, or non belief, but the daughter of Carol took her test and immediately went back to work at the local school, had to be told by her employer and the State DHSS she was not allowed to be there until her results are negative and escorted out of the building. Funeral is being planned, not certain how that's going to happen. Most of the rural Illinois bunch older and we're all hoping that this doesn't become a close proximity event with family/friends converging from out of town. I can't think of a worse type of environment to have a bunch of older relatives where people are crying, sobbing, blowing noses, and hugging as they grieve. My family of 4 will stay put and send our condolences.

Carol was a good Aunt to my wife and had many fond childhood memories. She'll be missed.

That's a tough story. Sorry to hear that. We have a lot of people who insist that refusing to distance is like refusing to evacuate Bolivar during a hurricane. It's not like that at all. The better analogy is Typhoid Mary.

This is what really gets me about this whole thing.

Even as someone who is glad masks finally got mandated, I think healthy debate about our government's response is merited. We should always question what the powers-that-be are up to, and I can absolutely concede that we probably didn't need to shut things down so strictly.

I can even understand the argument that "only high-risk ought to be taking precautions and the rest of us shouldn't have to." That attitude (at least in principle) acknowledges that there is a high level risk to certain people. I may disagree with the attitude, but I admit that has a lot to do with having several family members who are in high-risk groups.

It's this hoax mentality that I absolutely cannot stand.

Sorry for your loss. It gets complicated quickly with older people often dependent upon younger people's decisions.

Not second guessing y'all, but seems one of the first things you should do in these situations is confirm the precautions the care taker / company is taking. If anyone has family with care takers and hasn't done so, this should be a strong lesson.

My mom was on hospice and we still did this, even though it was kind of a moot point. My dad and his siblings did so for his mom and her care takers. And my dad is definitely in the this is all a hoax camp.
