A few things...

One...I am sooooooo happy that we don't see A&M on the list above until Friday.

Two...Let the weather do what it may. I don't know that we can help ourselves a whole lot in Hoover, so weather issues are a lot less stressful than they would be if we were desperately trying to scratch our way into a post-season bid.

And three...on the auto-qualifier list, would you please, please, pretty please put the AQ teams in bold? It helps old folks like me see who is already in. Thanks!

Oh...and thanks for doing this thread as well as similar threads throughout the year. Truly appreciate your efforts.

But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

No Aggie baseball until Friday.

After having four games a week for a couple of months, it's really hard to get used to.

I just have no clue what the purpose of this thing is. Does it really make money after all the travel expenses for the schools? Dumb tournament is dumb.

SEC tournaments need to disappear in all sports. They no longer serve any purpose.

Or keep them and only send teams who are on the bubble/currently not in the NCAA tourney.

Actually seven.

1) It gives the SECN programing (live games) in a time of the year there would be nada.
2) Not having a tournament gives you an extra week so potentially another league series but that extra week does not expand the number of games allowed during the season.
3) Gives those teams on the bubble a chance of a RPI bump by potentially playing several very high quality teams.
4) Teams miss playing ⅓ of the conference every season, IMO this necessitates some sort of tournament to pick the auto bid.

This being said, I dislike the current format. If the conference insists on all 16 teams in the tournament pool play of four pools is the way to go but it would require two sites. Each team plays the other three teams in the pool, best record advances, in case of a tie the best seeded team advances. Using this season's seeding Pools would look like this.

Pool A: (1) Georgia, (8) Mississippi St., (9) Ole Miss, (16) Mizzou
Pool B: (2) t.u., (7) Arkansas, (10) Tennessee, (15) South Carolina
Pool C: (3) A&M (6) Auburn, (11) Oklahoma, (14) LSU
Pool D: (4) Bama, (5) Florida, (12) Vandy, (13) Kentucky

You would play three games a day at each site Tuesday through Friday (with only three games scheduled a day at a site gives you a little leeway for weather. Pool A and Pool d at one site, Pool B and Pool C at the other. Semis on Saturday with Pool A winnner vs Pool D winner at one site; Pool B winner at Pool C winner at the other (or both at one). Championship Sunday between the semi winners.

TV could go something like this with the later games available on SEC+ until the previous game is finished.
9:00 AM
11:00 AM
1:00 PM
3:00 PM
5:00 PM
7:00 PM

This format would guarantee 3 games for every team with no team playing more the 5 games.

I love your tourney idea -- if this were an important or deciding tourney. But as it mostly is not and the SEC is trying to get teams to Omaha to win titles, I think it's just too many games.

Don't get me wrong, our version would be amazing for the sport and for fans. The 14 team setup was horrible, I view the current incarnation as slightly less horrible. But I do not think any of the top baseball schools are chomping at the bit to double the number of tourney games anytime soon.

Sounds a lot like the NCAA tournament. In fact it basically is … from 40 years ago. Love it. But only if you can guarantee no injuries. Otherwise way too many games. 3 this year for the higher ranked teams if they go through sounds good. But single elimination in baseball is just dumb.

When did five games in a week suddenly become too many? Four is the norm most weeks with many teams playing five at points in the regular season. Teams that fall to the losers bracket will play five games in four days if one is to advance to the Supers. The idea I propose is 5 over six days if you get to the Championship.

Oh, I agree. That's not too many. I'm more talking about the total inventory of the tournament nearly doubling with the pool place set up. I'm all for it. I just don't see the baseball program signing up for it.

The only thing that a postseason tourney does is gives teams who DIDN'T earn a shot at the tourney a way to get into the tourney. It can only reward those that don't deserve to be rewarded.

Conferences should be limited in size to the amount of teams that can play a full round robin in all sports. I hate uneven schedules.

IF we're going to play a postseason conference tourney then it should not be a full field tournament. Mizzou, LSU, USCe have no business still having gear in their lockers at this point in the year. I'd personally expand that to UK and Vandy as well although I realize UK will probably make it into the tourney (with a 2-8 conference series mark).

So at a minimum I'd cut it to 12 teams, full single eliminatination. I'm pretty sure that would be a max 5 game, minimum 4 game week for the champ.

I don't dislike your pool-play idea. In fact, it is far better than the one-and-done that is the current set-up. However, I prefer the old system of 12 teams make it to the conference tournament max. Normal "regional" style with a winner's and loser's bracket, double elimination.

I also know the SEC wants to maximize the number of teams that make it into the NCAA field, so we are likely stuck with all 16 heading to Hoover.

Official SEC 2026 ABS specs:
Width: 19 inches (home plate is 17" wide). Top: 58% of the batter's certified standing height. Bottom: 23% of the batter's certified standing height. It's positioned over the middle of the plate (8.5" in front of the back tip).

For comparison (per MLB's official ABS specs):
Width: 17 inches. Top: 53.5% of height. Bottom: 27% of height.

That's roughly 67 inches bigger vertically than MLB's 2026 ABS zone for the same player. Add the extra 2 inches of width and you get a noticeably bigger target. For a typical SEC hitter around 6'1" (73"), the zone runs from roughly 16.8" to 42.3" high. Still a big rectangle that includes pitches that would often look "up" or "down" to the naked eye (and definitely off the plate edges).
Sean98

I'm actually ok with this. I think the zone should shrink as you age. I wouldn't hold an 8 year old to the MLB zone and not expect a billion walks. So gradually shrinking it through little league to HS to college to MLB makes sense to me.

Edit: it seems they've essentially adopted the "buffer" they apply to grading umpires into the ABS based on the description.
