it's the series of the year in the SEC...A&M at Auburn...for the final tournament slot in Hoover.

the Ags have struggled on the Plains. Only won the series there in 2016. Lost the series in 2014 and 2018.

there has only been 1 sweep in the series. A&M at Blue Bell in 2015

let's check in with the Frisco Classic field:

#34 Baylor
#61 A&M
#72 Auburn
#74 OU

perhaps 1 regional team in the group if the Bears can finish with a winning record in the Big 12. Currently 9-9.

it will be interesting to see if the new coaching regime retains the same, um, enthusiasm for these neutral site tournaments. So many times the advertised "great field" does not turn out that way

In terms of both RPI and percentage of enjoyable games, these tournaments are still better than another 3-game weekend series against a team like Holy Cross.
I don't like that there were teams playing their conference mates in these tournaments, though.

I, for one, really appreciate you doing this every week, John. Nice to know it didn't become a covid casualty.

From the fan perspective the in state tournaments are always a plus in that it gives Aggies near the cities in which they are played an easy opportunity to see the team with a short trip and good availability of tickets.. At times the field of these tournaments have been rathe meh but in general they have been good and even excellent. IMO to abandon them all together would be a mistake. Still I wish we would occasionally use one of the four nonleague weekends to travel out of state. It might mean every so often having only two nonconference weekends at home but I think this would be easily offset if we get a strong ACC or Pac-12 team to visit Olsen.

I absolutely agree. Have had a blast many times at all of them, including Round Rock this year. I hope we continue with Round Rock, and either Frisco or go to the new Globe Life Tournament in Arlington. I'd drop Houston until they bring back better teams.

I would like to see us play in one in-state tournament and play one true non-conference road series. And regarding playing conference opponents in these tournaments - that doesn't usually happen. The Round Rock tourney this year had to fill in teams at the last minute because of Covid scheduling. I believe originally Indiana and a California team were supposed to join A&M and Oklahoma. When some of the schools decided to limit travel, Baylor and Auburn were added (I think that's how that played out.)

There are lots of opportunities/locations for early season tournaments in Texas:

  • Frisco
  • Globe Life
  • Minute Maid
  • Round Rock
  • Corpus Christi
  • Sugar Land
  • Heck, a tourney at UT-RGV and/or San Antonio would be cool if you could get the right teams to come

a few notes...

LSU won its series vs. Auburn.

LSU and Missouri do not play this season.

I think one more win against Alabama will clinch a spot for LSU

so at this moment only 7 SEC teams are above .500 in conference play.

the selection committee may have to relax its recent unwritten rule about at-large bids for teams under .500 in league play

By recent, you mean since the last tournament?

In the 2019 tourney, 4 teams got at-large bids with less than a .500 conference record (Auburn, Florida, TCU, and Tennessee).

Also, watching broadcast SEC Network/ESPNU games the announcers seem to believe that 14 SEC W should be enough to get an at large bid.

I'm doing math on Sunday, which is dangerous, but, if I'm figuring this right, assuming all games in next week's series between A&M/LSU and Missouri/Auburn are played, today's game at Auburn is pretty much a must win for A&M to make Hoover.

Win today, and A&M has a 2 game lead over both Missouri and Auburn, and would control their own destiny. Win 2 against LSU, and we'd be in no matter what happens in the other series--one win against LSU would even be enough if Missouri were to win the Auburn series 2-1. One win against LSU would not be enough if Auburn wins that series.

Lose today, and we have to have help--an Auburn sweep of Missouri would have us out no matter what we do against LSU. 2 out of 3 against LSU would only be enough if Missouri were to win the series against Auburn 2-1--a Missouri sweep against Auburn would see us out.

Do I have that right?

This is right except for there is the possibility of LSU losing today which would mean us sweeping them next week would leave LSU and Mizzou out and Auburn and us in.
W

A&M needs to win today and pick up conference win #9.

and if the Ags do...then it all but guarantees that 10 conference wins will get A&M to Hoover.

the only scenario in which it doesn't...is where Missouri sweeps Auburn (and A&M only wins 1 vs. LSU).

Mizzou would win the tiebreaker
W
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
if A&M loses today...then A&M and Auburn are tied at 8 wins apiece heading into the final weekend.

and both Auburn and Mizzou have the tiebreaker over the Ags.

it would just about force A&M to sweep LSU to make Hoover.

the LSU-Alabama finale is important today

LSU up 12-4 in 8th
Wicked Good Ag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Missouri 7-20
Auburn 8-19
TAMU 8-19
LSU (likely) 11-16 now
Kentucky 11-16

only way we get in is if we sweep LSU or Missouri splits with Auburn but Missouri takes series and we take the series over LSU

Outside shot if Kentucky get swept

Boyd's RPI needs report has LSU finishing in the top 16 if the Tigers win the final 3 games and the midweek contest.

Edit: I don't think it's updated following this weekend.
jkag89
How long do you want to ignore this user?
No way LSU would be considered as a host with a sub .500 league mark even with a top 16 RPI. If I remember correctly. a big if, the Aggies were near 16 in the RPI in 2018 but a 13-17 record in the SEC had them sent to Austin as a 3 seed.
