Bowling Green becomes the first school to drop baseball due to COVID-related issues.

BGSU Drops Baseball

There will be more, you can count on that.

Recall A&M opened the 2017 season sweeping Bowling Green...15-1, 19-2, and 16-5. BGSU was only 2-11 in the abbreviated 2020 season. They went 16-33 in 2019 and 11-39 in 2018. Maybe it was time for the program to go anyway.

Other sports to hit the chopping block since COVID hit the country:

Old Dominion - wrestling
Florida International - men's track
Cincinnati - men's soccer
Akron - men's cross country, men's golf, women's tennis

But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

Southland is changing tourney rules a year in advance. Usually the Top 8 make the Tournament

In baseball, women's soccer, softball and volleyball, the top four regular-season finishers will advance to 2020-21 tournaments at the site of the No. 1 seed.

good move by the Southland.

conference tournaments in all sports in all leagues are part of the "bloatedness" or "excess" of college athletics.

cap the tournaments at 4 or 6 teams...maybe 8 teams for leagues with a TV network. Or just get rid of the tournaments altogether

When athletic departments that weren't already severely ill start cutting programs, then lets debate that issue.

ECU was already running a $7.5 million deficit.

That their projected savings ($5 million) is double the projected deficit attributable to Covid-19 ($2.5 million), that should clue you into what is really going on.

Finances in college athletics were already deeply problematic. This crisis is sharpening the problem, yes, but its also providing great cover for athletic directors to do what they already probably wanted to do.

There may be a few athletic directors who are secretly glad COVID made these decisions for them. My guess is Furman, Ball State, ECU, and others didn't just now start Having the "dropping non-revenue sports" discussion.

No chance ECU baseball gets cut. They'd cut basketball before baseball.

Really glad Baseball wasn't cut at CM, they made post season last year but prior to that 1995 was last time the Chippewas made NCAA tourney. They did have a solid program in 80's and 90's especially for a northern school.. and they have a really nice baseball facility .

Chicago State dropped baseball today. Can't find a link - just saw it on D1Baseball's Twitter. CSU recently joined the WAC and was only 2-16 on the season before the COVID stoppage.

They were 10-41 in 2019, 13-41 in 2018, 11-41 in 2017, and 12-42 in 2016. Their website only goes back to the 2007 season, and in that stretch there were only 2 season where they lost less than 40 games. COVID or not, it appears it was time for the program to go.

Apparently, as of last August, Chicago State had been operating without a compliance director (yikes!) and only one athletic trainer (double yikes!).

The article suggests the university was already fighting to stay off the chopping block...have to wonder if their entire athletic program will be dropped in the near future.

athletic departments have a bunch of decisions to make before the fall semester begins.

need to drop the spring sports now so those players don't get a "free" fall semester

there goes whatever that college cup thing was called (that Byrne always wanted to win).

crazy to have 36 varsity sports to begin with. This drops them to 25

I'm not sure if any of those sports counted in the Director's Cup standings. I think they are still going to have more than anyone else.

I think you only count your 10 best men's and 10 best women's sports in the Director's Cup. Stanford may still win it, but probably won't have twice the number of points as 2nd place.

Bowling Green and Buffalo at Ohio State
Kent State and San Jose State at Penn State
Southern Illinois and Appalachian State at Wisconsin
Ball State and Arkansas State at Michigan
Florida Atlantic, Tennessee Tech, and BYU at Minnesota
Northern Iowa and Northern Illinois at Iowa
Toledo at Michigan State ... Michigan State at BYU
Western Kentucky and Ball State at Indiana ... Indiana at UConn
Central Michigan, South Dakota State, and Cincinnati at Nebraska
Memphis and Air Force at Purdue ... Purdue at Boston College
Tulane, Central Michigan, and Morgan State at Northwestern
Towson and Northern Illinois at Maryland
Monmouth at Rutgers ... Rutgers at Temple
Illinois State, Bowling Green, and UConn at Illinois

Bowling Green, Ball State, Central Michigan, BYU, and UConn are each on the list twice. The MAC might have to fold up shop completely if this continues.

Marquee games cancelled...

Ohio State at Oregon
Penn State at Virginia Tech
Wisconsin at Notre Dame
Michigan at Washington
Iowa State at Iowa (not really marquee, but a rivalry)
Miami, Fla. at Michigan State
Maryland at West Virginia

I think we need to prepare for no football at all this year. You know the rest of the Power 5 conferences will follow suit...especially the politically left-leaning Pac-12 and Big 12 Conferences.

yes, the MAC schools are really going to be hurting.

the B1G should provide leeway for Iowa and ISU to work something out. The campuses are only 110 miles apart

Look for the MAC schools to start dropping non-revenue sports. The cancellation of the Big 10 non-conference games will cost the conference schools about $10.5 million.
