Would we have made it to Omaha in 07 or 08?

Zach Britton was also in the recruiting class and would have been roommates with Kershaw if they had both attended Texas A&M

Shows how much of an underrated recruiter Childress is. He has an eye for elite talent that sometimes doesn't make it to campus

This is 100% inaccurate. Every college program recruits studs who don't make it to campus. This is not a skill set unique to Coach Childress.

Now...I'll give Coach Childress a high grade for mostly getting good pitching talent and developing it well once that talent gets here, but to say Childress is any sort of great overall recruiter is simply a false statement. Just look at our batting order, fielding capabilities, and basic fundamental play and you'll see how far away we are from the elite, powerful, CWS, and championship caliber teams.

Yea, we've cranked out some good pitchers during RC's tenure...but that's where it ends.

Hard to argue with Luke's excellent summary, that covered it all...just because RC goes after, and secures a commitment from 'some' elite talent, does not make him an underrated recruiter for all the reasons Luke detailed.

It follows if one is over achieving as a recruiter, as you imply, that would be reflected on the field/records. We've not been elite under RC, although we've had some competitive teams over the years. But Elite? No.

OP- probably.

Both teams lacked pitching depth. Kershaw would have been like a gun in a knife fight. We would have been National seeds both years. National seeds get to Omaha ~ half the time.

The only question is whether RC's pressure problem would have been too much for even Kershaw to overcome. Probably not.

I think either the 2007 or 2008 team should have made it to the CWS.

and when the Childress era is over someday we're going to look back at those 2 seasons...as an indicator of how the era was going to go. Those teams had great talent and enough talent.

the 2007 Rice team with Savery, Friday, and company was very elite. The 2008 Owls not as much. There was an opportunity there

2008, 2012, 2015, and 2016 will go down as the some of the biggest missed opportunities in school history

and for the obligatory comparison to the MJ era...and there are a lot of good comparisons...

Childress' 2007 & 2008 teams are very reminiscent of MJ's 1987 & 1988 teams. Great teams early in the coach's tenure that could not quite break through.

and fair to wonder...what if one of them had? Would the era have turned out or ended differently

I think when all of the dust settles, it will be quite difficult to differentiate between what MJ did here and what RC did here.
