Has anyone seen any yet? Wondering where we stack up.....I wonder if we have to wait for the MLB signing period to end before we see any, (as of now D1 Baseball and baseball America don't have anything up)

We will be in the 20 range to start the season ( IMO ) . If Helman comes back ( can't believe he still has not signed ) , then we will have a very good shot at hosting a Regional or even Super , provided we plug a couple of holes.

I could not disagree more. I believe next season could be more of a struggle than this year and last. We have some big losses to replace and worse, we have some under-performers who need to see a lot less playing time...but I'm not sure we have anyone on the bench who can bear them out. I hope I'm wrong, but I see 2019 as a difficult season.

I agree we had some underperformers last year but I think some turn it around, I think our pitching staff is more consistent and I feel good about our shot at getting back to Omaha.

I thought he signed with the Twins.

Luke gets it. We need to find pieces that actually improve the roster. Bringing guys back from last year and just assuming they will be better is a recipe for disaster.

You need a mixture of new blood (transfers, freshman) and those who have been in the background. Those that get a chance to shine that have been in the background have to shine however.
I think 2/3 of our weekend rotation is already on the roster from last year but we will need an outfielder and one infielder to go with where we put Wingate

Edit. Would love to see if Andritios can pitch next year. I know this year he was battling injuries but some hard throwing righty could work

Helman has not signed yet. Kind of a mystery ..... but only has a few days to do so.

it's a strange deal with regard to upperclassmen improvement.

in the last 4 years, we've seen players like Allemand, Nau, Moss, Choruby, et al...make tremendous improvements in their game as junior & seniors. Leaps and bounds. To the point where you think it's a different guy in their uniform from their freshman & sophomore years.

but there have also been players in recent years...most notably three or four in the past 2 seasons...that were just shells of their former selves as juniors and seniors. Strange indeed

Luke , we will have to agree to disagree . We had lots of guys that took a step back last year ( going from Fish to Sophs ) ..... I think we will see that trend reverse this year as they become Juniors .

Guys like Shew , Coleman , Foster , Andritsos ( and maybe Helman ) have lots to play for and should provide leadership in the field .... along with a guy like Blaum ( who has been through the SEC wars ). That gives you 6-7 spots in the lineup filled with experienced upperclassmen .

Now add in DeLoach and Frizell as sophs ( both saw a bunch of playing time last year ) and you are only looking for contributions from a few of the new guys .

We had very little production in our every day lineup from upperclassmen last year . Your Junior class should be your most advanced and reliable guys .... last year that was Janca and Bedford .... nobody else . That will not be an issue next season ( IMO ) .

If we don't find consistent starting pitching and some power, we will not improve next year.

DeLoach is going to be our best position player next year unless Hellman comes back.

There is little power on this team unless Andritsos and Frizzell or a freshman brings it.

I think shewmake has power potential as well. His back I think annoyed him this year so he had a drop off in power.

Foster has some as well

If anything, I think that's the one thing that's almost certain to improve, based on what we saw out of Doxakis and Lacy late in the season.

I wouldn't put much stock into any of the early rankings for 2019. Not until early Fall when we know for sure who all is actually on campus for each of the schools, who signed, who transferred (and where), etc.

Uh.....if we're being honest, most everyone knows the preseason polls in Jan/Feb are suspect at best. I appreciate seeing that others pain through the off-season like I do, but clamoring for the pre-pre-season polls is....well.....just a symptom of suffering through the off-season. They wont be remotely meaningful for about another 8 months.

It is a LONG offseason for sure . The preseason baseball polls are all over the board every season . I do like the Ags chances next year with a solid core of upperclassmen and some talented younger guys in the sophomore and freshman classes.

Wait, what 3-4 sophs took a step back last year???
Foster was much improved
Shew was down in power numbers
Coleman was down from when he got hot in postseason but not overall IIRC

That being said, if this team has improvements from Frizell, Foster, deloach, and andritsos/Coleman
Then the will be very good. They will also need to have a big time bat from a newcomer to be special.

I really don't worry too much about pitching. It is consistent year after year regardless of who we have back.

Line up
1. Deloach. .300
2. New bat. .320
3. Shew. .380. 10+hr
4. Frizzell. .320 10+hr
5. Andritsos/cole .270 10+hr
6. Foster. .300. 10+hr
7. Wingate. .260
8. Catcher/cole .250
9. New bat. . 250

Shew was down in just about every offensive category . Coleman was WAY down , granted he was injured and never really got healthy IMO , I think he turns it around big time and has a monster year . Foster was about the same as his freshman year , but I think the lightbulb came on late in the season when he started driving the ball the other way .

We also had Jr's that did not improve much in Janca and Bedford ..... that was over half our lineup.

I really like what Frizell and DeLoach were able to do as freshman . They both had very good approaches at the plate and will be better next year ( IMO ) .

I am also very excited about Watson ( have seen him play a bunch of baseball and the kid is a player ) . He has huge upside and is very advanced in his approach at the plate . His bat will force its way into the lineup somewhere ..... whether at 3rd , DH or maybe even a corner OF spot.

I also think Ty Coleman has a chance to be the everyday 2nd baseman. Great speed , slick fielder and plays with attitude , a very smart baseball player.

Power should be fine.

Frizzell and Andritsos had 7 homers and Foster had 8, all in limited at bats. You can tell just by looking at the first two that hitting the ball over 330 feet isn't an issue. It's what they're doing between homers that's the bigger issue.

Shewmake also dropped off in power numbers but hit 11 the year before. If he tightened up his strike zone, he could easily get back to that next season.

Coleman also spent some time injured this season and still hit 5 homers. I would also think that he gets back to form next season seeing as he started off this one injured. His home run against Arkansas cleared the back of their stadium, so the potential is there.

If Andritsos or Coleman can be solid behind Shew ..... I think Braden will have a big year offensively. Andritsos was very good in limited time this year and Coleman has all the tools to be a very good hitter . Both Anditsos and Coleman were
hurt for much of the year and never got fully healthy .

Coleman has a good eye and an advanced approach at the plate . If he can hit in the .280 or above range , with 10 HR , this team will be much improved . Andritsos needs to continue to grow as a hitter , he was very aggressive last season and probably needs to work counts a little better , but he makes consistent contact and uses all fields pretty well .

Normally I would agree. But in 2017, they picked the two teams that would make the finals in Omaha this year, and most of the 8 along with it, so their black magic/crystal ball was not too far off in this case.

Their article also mentioned that trying to pick the Omaha Champ for 2019 now, is way too soon, but it is a fun diversion....

And for the record, I am eternally optimistic, as our coaches tend to find a juco diamond in the rough more times than not, and if they can get them to overcome life issues, they are usually really successful. So, it could be that we have another Helman waiting in the wings.

Usually ...... some JUCO guys are still available right before the fall starts . Not many .... but we have been able to find a few guys to plug holes where needed.
