with the postseason still to go...Vanderbilt (33-22-1) has had a rather disappointing season to date. This team has 2 surefire 1st round picks in Wright and Kendall, but stumbled around to a 15-14-1 record vs. SEC opponents. And Vandy got to play all the bad teams in the league (Bama, Tenn, UGA)
W
How long do you want to ignore this user?

here we go...the conference most likely to steal a bid is the Missouri Valley.

#23 Missouri State is a lock for an at-large bid, but no other team in the league has an RPI in the top 60. So if DBU or another team in the league wins the tournament, the bubble will shrink by one
W
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
another league to watch is C-USA.

#10 Southern Miss is an at-large lock. #39 Louisiana Tech is in decent shape. Maybe #45 ODU too. If any other team wins the tourney like a red-hot Rice team, the bubble might shrink
W

in the Big East, #38 St. John's (40-9) was the regular season champion. No other team has an RPI in the top 75. Could be a bid stolen in the Big East. Not sure St. John's is an at-large lock however
W

all in all there are not that many mid-major at-large locks in the RPI top 40 this year. The rest of the bid-stealers would likely have to come from the power conferences (e.g. Kansas winning the Big 12 tournament).

chances are good that an upset winner in the Southland or Sun Belt would directly cost that league a team in the field

Game 4 has been pushed back to tomorrow. Don't know if that's ever happened before.

Maybe we should start a bubble watch team thread?

Thanks for the heads up. Made revisions up top. Right now the scheduled evening game today, Wednesday and Thursday has been pushed to the following morning with the remaining games that day moving back a slot. Making guesses on game times assuming they will try to keep more or less to the same times. Weather may be problem tomorrow also. I'll make further adjustments when I come aware of them.

We will likely have trouble with the rain tomorrow, too.

This has the potential to cause games to get backed up to Friday or even Saturday. Having Friday to rest for the 2-0 teams might be out the window.

After North Carolina being left out of the dance last season due to not making the ACC Tourney, it has expanded from 10 to 12 teams. They had what was essentially two play-in games 10 Seed vs 7 Seed and 9 Seed vs 8 Seed with the winners advancing to pool play with the winner of each pool playing in the championship game.

Now they have a four pool system, explanation as per wiki:
Quote:

On October 6, 2016, the ACC announced that the tournament would expand to twelve teams and have a new format. The regular season winners of the Atlantic and Coastal divisions will claim the top two seeds, while the remaining seeds would be determined by conference winning percentage. The teams would be split up into four 3-team pools. The pools would be a round robin format, with each team in the tournament guaranteed a minimum of two games. The four winners of pool play would then advance to a four team, single-elimination bracket to determine the league champion.

Pool A consists of #1 Seed Louisville, #8 Florida State & #12 Notre Dame. Pool B consists of #2 North Carolina, #7 NC State & #11 Boston College. Pool C has #3 Wake Forest, #6 Miami & #10 Georgia Tech. Pool D has #4 Virginia, #5 Clemson & #9 Duke. These pool games take place Tuesday 5/23/2017 through Friday 5/26/2017. The winners of each pool advance to Semifinals on Saturday (Pool A winner vs. Pool D winner, Pool B winner vs. Pool C winner). The Championship game between those winners is Sunday 5/28/2017.

As far as determination of the champion, the format is equivalent to a single-elimination tournament in which the seeds #1 through #4 get a first-round bye. This is because there are two ways in which the three teams in a pod can sort themselves out. The first way is that one team finishes 2-0, another 1-1, and the third 0-2. In this case, the 2-0 team advances to the semi-finals. The other way is that all three teams finish 1-1. In this latter case, the highest seed team advances to the semifinals. Therefore the two lower seeds must win both of their games to advance, but the top seed need only beat the winner of the game between the two lower seeds. Furthermore, the two lower seeds in each pool play first, then each plays the top seed. This means that the game between the two lower seeds is an elimination game. When the winner of that game plays the top seed, the matchup is perfectly equivalent to a quarter-final game (the winner advances to the semi-finals). The only difference between the pool format and a single elimination format is that the loser of the game between the two lower seeds still plays the higher seed, however that game has no implications for any team in regards to the ACC tournament championship.

Yep. I get what they are trying to do but from a fan's point of view it is an entirely unsatisfactory format. For example, Clemson lost to Duke this evening and now has no shot at winning the championship yet they need to hang around until Friday in order to play an entirely meaningless and pointless game vs Virginia. When they meet that pool will already be decided.

Other Tuesday Top 25 Scores
Duke 6 - #18 Clemson 3
East Carolina 14 - #24 Central Florida 3

I like the ACC format IF they had the games over three days for each of the pools (I.e four games a day) or pool a and b finished in two days and pool c and d finished next two days this only two teams have to wait around but they are playing for something.

One of the reasons I wouldn't want to go to Hoover if it is one game and out like yesterday it is a long trip for possibility of just one game from a fans perspective.

I do like the idea of the a pool being tied the highest seeded team moves on because it also rewards the regular season and makes it much more difficult for a team to likely steal a bid that wouldn't make the field

let's put some numbers to the situation...

64 teams make the field. 31 automatic bids and 33 at-large bids.

-- starting with the Big 12...assume Tech is the auto.

there are 5 at-large locks for the league: TCU, OU, BU, WVU, t.u.

-- then the Pac-12...Oregon State is the auto.

2 at-large locks: Arizona & Stanford

-- the SEC...assume Florida is the auto.

6 at-large locks: LSU, State, Arkansas, Vandy, UK, Auburn

-- the ACC...assume Louisville is the auto

6 at-large locks: UNC, Clemson, UVA, WF, FSU, NCSt

-- the AAC...assume UH is the auto.

2 at-large locks: USF & UCF

-- the B1G...assume Nebraska is the auto.

2 at-large locks: Michigan & Indiana

-- the Big West...Long Beach is the auto.

1 at-large lock: Fullerton

------
so that's 24 of the 33 at-large spots already claimed

9 at-large spots left among:

#32 Maryland
#36 UConn
#43 A&M
#47 Miami
#56 UCLA

-- 2nd team from the Southland (SELU/McNeese)
-- 2nd team from C-USA (Southern Miss/LaTech/ODU)
-- 2nd team from the Sun Belt (South Alabama/Lafayette/Coastal)
-- 2nd team from the West Coast (San Diego/Gonzaga/Loyola)

then it comes down to the number of bid-stealers that grab an auto bid and push another team from their league into at-large lock status

State brings Georgia's season to a close. The Bulldogs (25-32) miss the postseason for the 6th year-in-a-row.

Georgia should be back on A&M's schedule in 2018 and the Ags are due for another trip to Athens. Haven't played there since 2014 I believe

This assumes your list of conference tourney winners. If Mizzou or SoCar wins the SEC, the Committee MAY take a 1-for-1 (i.e. Mizzou/SoCar in for A&M). The same in other conferences though I don't know who's still able to win those vs. your list here.

Our last 10 2-8 record doesn't help.
W
How long do you want to ignore this user?

yes, if Mizzou or South Carolina wins the SEC tournament..."9 at-large spots left" becomes "8 at large spots left"

hard to say which team or league would take the hit for that
