Anyone else watching on ESPNU? About to go to the bottom on the 3rd.

In the bottom of the second the HP ump missed a check swing call against Vidales. What was most irritating wasn't that the call was missed because it was very close, but that he didn't ask for help from the other umps who had a better view. Real time close judgement calls are one thing, but not using standard protocol on things like check swings is the type of call that should have the SEC head of officials evaluating someone's job performance. If your job is to make sure the calls are correct, why wouldn't you use available resources to do so?

Didn't you know umpires are omniscient?

You are correct that it would have been best if the blue just called the pitch and got help if asked for by Mizzou's catcher. However once the plate umpire made the call none of the other umpires would have reversed that call, especially if it was the either or call that you suggested. I'm convinced umps are more concerned about the brotherhood than getting the call right so unless the call is obviously incorrect it will not be overturned.

Hence why people joke about umps and cops being picked on growing up and seeking positions of power to get back.

Umpires and officials are worse than cops, no accountability, no oversight that makes things right!!!

Unless the rules of softball are different in regards to check swings, an umpire can't really miss the call on a "very close" check swing. It is a complete judgement call. Did the batter attempt to hit the ball or not? Some umpires use some guidelines such as breaking the wrist or bat barrel crossing the front of the plate to help them make a determination on a swing or no swing, but these are not in the rule book.
