Scouts are intrigued by Martin but admit they're having trouble figuring him out. He has overmatched hitters in the Alaska and Cape Cod college leagues the last two summers, but his difficulties throwing strikes at Texas A&M relegated him to mostly middle relief during the springs. If the summer Martin shows up in the spring of 2017, he'll likely go in the first round, especially if he has success as a starter.
On the Cape, Martin struck out twice as many batters as he allowed baserunners while dealing at 95-96 mph and scraping 98 with his fastball. His curveball can be just as nasty, featuring plenty of power and depth at its best. Considering he has spent almost all of his college career as a reliever, he has surprising feel for a changeup that could become a solid third offering if he uses it more.
Martin has the arsenal to succeed in the rotation. Recruited as a two-way player out of high school, he also has athleticism that should translate into control and durability. If he can't do a better job of harnessing his stuff, it's still good enough that he could be a late-inning bullpen weapon.
