The ceiling

In Williams' first season at Virginia Tech, the Hokies finished 11-22, which was slightly better than the 9-22 showing the year before. Which is to say the sanest, most rationale ceiling to reach for is one that is based merely on any sort of improvement. Baby steps, A&M fans, baby steps.

With returning players, Williams at least has a core that has been through the rigors of a college basketball season, so there is at least hope for some sort of prize at the end of the year. If he wrings everything he can out of this team, a postseason bid isn't out of the question. Will it be an NCAA Tournament bid? Maybe, though, that would be a long shot. More likely some kind of bid NIT, CBI and so forth could be offered, and that alone would be a huge step.

I normally really like Dana O'Neil, but a lot of this piece read like someone who didn't see us play a single game last year.

There was a mistake in the first version (before a few people pointed it out on Twitter) where she said Nebo's numbers dipped from his sophomore year to his junior year because he was no longer playing alongside Robert Williams. Which is kind of weird on a couple levels. (There's still a grammar error there where you can tell they changed up those sentences.)

It's mostly fine, and these offseason 'state of the program' pieces are hard to write because you're basically helicoptering into a program that national writers didn't pay much attention to at all last season.

But I agree with the overall assessment.
