The bottom of SEC teams being excluded from the B12/SEC Challenge has been true since 2015-2016 according to this Wikipedia article:

"The format is similar to the ACCBig Ten Challenge. Each of the ten members of the Big 12 plays a game against a member of the SEC. Half of the ten games are hosted by the Big 12 team and the other half are hosted by the SEC team. Because the SEC has 14 members, four teams of the SEC (since 2015-16, the bottom four teams from the previous season's standings) are excluded from the challenge each season."

Are these games matched up with where each team fell in the standings the previous year?

as opposed to what the preseason projections?

I have no idea how they match them up. It would seem that it goes off the previous year's standings but I've not found any clear cut reasoning behind it

Those games on paper potentially pretty challenging...playing Houston, @Wichita State, or @Memphis loaded with Penny's #1 recruiting class is no joke.

So I've looked at a couple of press releases and I don't see a single mention that the 4 SEC teams were for sure going to be the 4 that were left out of the Big 12 challenge. I do also remember mentioning my concerns when it was announced that it was never mentioned to be on the same day as the challenge, and if it were on the same day the AAC would have to adjust their conference schedule.

You think some of these teams will also be in the b12/sec challenge?
I think you're correct that it hasn't been spelled out. Most of us just assumed that since the bottom 4 teams at the end of the 16-17 season were the 4 teams left out of the 17-18 and 18-19 challenges that the same would apply when the 19-20 and 20-21 matchups are announced.

I keep a spreadsheet of the Big 12/SEC Challenge, and now looking at the last 5 years, I could definitely see why Ole Miss may be left out instead of us, as well as picking Mizzou over South Carolina.

Didnt we play Baylor in 15 and OU in 14 or 15 but as "regular" non con games?

If the SEC-Big 12 matchup is a one-year deal, I bet we play Oklahoma St. If they make it a 2-year home and home, I bet we get Baylor.
