Five-star forward D.J. Jeffries announced Monday he was decommitting from Kentucky and reopening his recruitment.

I don't see much of an "in" here. His finalists besides Kentucky were Mississippi St. and Alabama. He is a Memphis area kid and Memphis looks most likely now.

Jeffries, a 6-foot-7 small forward from Olive Branch High School (Mississippi), committed to Kentucky back in March, choosing the Wildcats over Alabama and Mississippi State.

Jeffries was coached on the AAU circuit by Penny Hardaway last spring and summer, and played for the same AAU program this past grassroots season. When Hardaway took over for Tubby Smith at Memphis, there were rumors that Jeffries could decommit and flip to the Tigers, but he stuck with his commitment at the time.

Don't sell yourself short there Hop.

I know there were some lazy comparisons of Penny getting hired to Clyde, and a general laugh at it, but Penny's doing some pretty big work that could really hurt Cal more than it would hurt Duke, NC or Kansas.


The significance of Jeffries is he's the first player to decommit from Kentucky since Calipari arrived.

James Wiseman, the country's top 2019 recruit was considered a Kentucky lean. Now there is strong competition for Wiseman by Penny.

Penny's in the mix for Trendon Watford, C.J. Walker and Matthew Hurt, all among the top 20 in the country by ESPN.


He won't get them all, of course, but if he gets 2 of those 5, he's already doing way better than most expected.
