SEC basketball on the upswing

Frank Martin at USCe finally establishing his place. LSU will likely no longer have a punching bag coach. AJ is bringing in a top 6 class to Bama for a team already trending up. Kentucky is Kentucky. Drew at Vandy looks solid. Mizzou brought in an ace recruiter along with Porter. And Mike White has UF on the upswing.

Our window under BK being better than a slightly under 500 coach in the SEC may be rapidly closing.

Reports are that LSU has contacted both Tom Crean and Will Wade (VCU) to gauge interest in their basketball opening.

And think about non-SEC basketball in our area.

Houston - Kelvin Sampson made huge strides this year. Have to figure UH will be an NCAA contender going forward.

Baylor - Somehow they keep pulling in talent and have good teams year after year.

TCU - Jamie Dixon turned that program around his first year. High ceiling for the Frogs.

SMU - Actually better after Larry Brown left...tough Round 1 upset, but the Ponies were really good this year.

Texas - TBD on Coach Smart, but I don't think he'll be down for long. And if he is, you know the Horns will can his ass and go hire a proven winner to take his place. Same with Lon Krueger at Oklahoma.

tech - They weren't terrible this year - they're just not cut out for the Big 12 hoops grind - but they were certainly better than we were.

Heck, even UT-Arlington, Texas State and A&M-Corpus weren't terrible this year.

I think A&M is at a real tipping point. Anything past '17-'18 with Kennedy and we'll fall into a hole we may not be able to crawl out of. The rest of the SEC and the rest of the teams in our region are taking hoops very seriously...all the while we're sitting quietly, picking our noses and reminding everyone how great the 2012 football season was.

But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

MSU, UTn should be improved.
Arky should take a step back.
UK is UK.
Mizzou is going to have michael Porter jr
Auburn has talent but was awful this season.
UGA who knows?
UF is looking like they'll be good moving forward.
USCe should take a step back.
LSU couldn't possibly be worse.
Ole Miss is a perennial NIT team.
Vandy loses some talent but Drew seems like a good coach.

bama will be better.

auburn was the youngest team in the country in minutes played, they will no doubt be improved.

Mizzou will improve on the last 2 years because it's almost impossible not to, but that program isn't in a hole as much as a near-bottomless pit. They're going to need a good coach + a lot of lucky breaks to get back to competitive.

The SEC always gets the short end when it comes to the NCAA tourney. Sometimes it seems like a payback because of the strength of SEC football. Other times it seems caused by the dominance of UK in the SEC. Whatever the reason for the slight, it is obvious the SEC has had quality basketball for a number of years.

Arkansas was knifed by the refs today or the powerful ACC teams would of lost 2 to the SEC.

The refs kept Ark from scoring in the last 4 or so minutes of the game? Wow. Didn't know that even though I was watching it.

Well, Kentucky's team is always freshmen so at least those guys won't be any tougher. So we got that going for us, which is nice.

No, but they missed multiple blatant bad calls that changed the momentum and direction of the game.

For Arkansas it really depends on what the JUCO guards do. Losing Kingsley will hurt but top 40 recruit Daniel Gafford will help. Hannahs was a good player but really struggled against the better teams we played that had much better athletes than him, and we have more size coming in since he was a generous 6'3.

Lose Barford or Macon and it's back to the drawing board. Hopefully they learn from Qualls and don't leave early to play in Europe when they (at least Barford IMO) could play themselves into a 2nd round NBA pick with another year.

While Mizzou is probably getting Porter Jr., I don't think he is going to stick around long enough to make any impact in their program...

But I definitely agree that we've got to make inroads this upcoming season before we get lost in the SEC landscape.

"Seems" is the verb in that emboldened sentence.

"because of the strength of SEC football" is a clause that modifies or describes as an adjective the noun "payback."

Carry on...

There will still be plenty of wins available in this conference. We competed in the Big 12 when that was actually a very difficult conference. The quality of our play has been substandard except for last year, we're not going to suddenly be unable to win because everybody else is so good. It's still about how welll, or crappy, we play.

I'm curious as to the backstory here. Heron is Auburn's only 5 star recruit in program history. Was he sold the promise of being a 1 and done, yet this did not materialize? Is this story similar to 5 star recruit Malik Newman? Newman reportedly did not get along with MSU coach Ben Howland.

Odd deal. This was an article just yesterday that was a very positive spin on Heron's freshman season, including quotes from Heron and Pearl.

http://www.al.com/auburnbasketball/index.ssf/2017/03/bruce_pearl_believes_auburns_m.html

Heron as mentioned was a 5-star recruit who made the All-SEC freshman team. This would not be a kid at end of bench transferring kind of deal.

That's a fairly glowing report for a bunch of teams who under-performed against "outside tournament competition" other than TCU who won the terrible consolation prized of the NIT.

Most 5 star rated recruits want to go to a school where they can get the development and exposure to pursue their NBA dreams sooner rather than later. This is exactly what Calipari sells at UK. This is his main recruiting pitch. Sometimes those expectations don't materialize and recruits blame the school or coach, whether that blame is fair or not.

Heron might just be homesick for all we know but it is curious as to why he's leaving after only one year given that he received ample playing time.

Some recent articles have indicated that Porter Jr. has said some things indicating that he *might* stick around 2 years at Mizzou due to his dad being on the coaching staff and to play with his younger brother (particularly if his brother is not able to reclassify to be a 2017 recruit).

South Carolina is losing Notice, Thornwell, and McKie due to graduation. And if they also lose P.J. Dozier as an early NBA draft entry that will be an even bigger hit.

Now hard to say if they will take a step back as big as say Oklahoma did this season (from Final Four all the way to no post-season), but will be really challenging to replace the above mentioned guys.
