Class: 2017
High School: Cinco Ranch

Recruiting Background

On the second to last day of the early signing period for basketball, Billy Kennedy and the Aggies officially add Jay Jay Chandler to the 2017 recruiting class.

Chandler, a 6-4, 175-pounder is from the Houston area, playing high school ball at Cinco Ranch. The combo guard has received interest from a number of schools, but the latest and most sincere interest came from Rick Stansbury at Western Kentucky, Buzz Williams at Virginia Tech, Josh Pastner at Georgia Tech and Mark Fox at Georgia, along with the obvious Texas A&M recruitment.

Texas A&M was high on Chandler's list a few months ago, but the recruiting trail went cold for a while. Until just recently, the Aggies were thought to be out of the mix for Chandler's services, but A&M made a strong push to land the combo guard who is considered a top-10 player in the state of Texas.

Scouting Report

The incoming freshman is considered a combo guard because he can find his own shot and score in a multitude of ways but also has good court vision and the ball-handling ability to bring the ball up the court. His ability to get to the basket in transition as well as in the half-court is his natural strength, along with being considered a good defender and an explosive athlete.

Chandler is very quick laterally and has the ability to play above the rim as shown below:

The youngster from Cinco Ranch has a ton of upside, but there are aspects of his game he will need to work on to prepare for the collegiate level. At the moment, he is a decent shooter from long range, but to continue to be effective at getting to the basket off the bounce, Chandler will have to improve his outside shooting.

Physically, he is at a good starting point for Darby Rich to work with him in the weight room. A summer of weight training, conditioning and individual instruction from the coaches will give Chandler the ability to withstand bumps in the paint and absorb contact from the bigs down low when he gets to the basket.

Future roster

Chandler is now a part of the 2017 signing class that already includes TJ Starks (PG), Savion Flagg (SG) and Isiah Jasey (F).

Chandler's addition to the 2017 roster greatly increases the depth at the point and scoring guard positions. Not only does he increase the depth, but his skillset increases the overall talent level and athleticism on the court. Chandler will fight for playing time with J.J. Caldwell and Starks at the point, while going up against Admon Gilder and Flagg on the perimeter. His presence will greatly enhance the competition and productivity at each position the moment he steps on campus.
