Hop has alluded to some foreign prospects we've been going after, and I've heard some pretty credible buzz that we're really close to bringing in a 6'6 swing man from Spain. Not sure what his name is, but I'm a big fan of recruiting young foreign prospects before they decide to go pro

Great pull! My brother and I used to call him Quesadilla. The Barone era was dark, but not quite as dark as the Melvin era. Wish we had a team this good when I was in school.

William McDowell White, the No. 3 ranked player in Australia per http://ausahoops.com , is visiting A&M this weekend.
Is Rated a 5-star prospect on that ausahoops.com site. Only 1 player in the 2015 class was rated a 5-star (Ben Simmons). 3 players in the 2016 class are rated 5-stars (this White kid, Thon Maker, and Harry Froling). The write up on this prospect:

quote:
McDowell-White is an athletic guard who plays above the rim. He is the most exciting player in the country and has the highest ceiling of any guard in Australia.

He is absolutely incredible with the ball in the open floor in transition.

He shoots the ball with good form, but inconsistently; it comes out of his hand very flat. He handles the ball well and is a player who just understands how to utilize his deep bag of skills. He has a tall frame with wide shoulders and looks like he will be able to add some decent muscle as he develops.

McDowell-White is strong for his position and uses his size and strength effectively to get to the rim and finish through contact. He moves reasonably well laterally but is hindered by poor defensive effort.

He sees the floor tremendously well. He often plays as a point guard and makes great decisions using on-ball screens.

If McDowell-White can focus his talents, he has the potential to be one of the best players to come out of Australia in the past decade.
They would have to coach this out of him of course:

Another article on this McDowell-White kid written by Scout basketball recruiting analyst Evan Daniels in July of last year.

quote:
Among the prospects that coaches were there to see was 6-foot-4 guard William McDowell-White, who recently had a strong showing at the FIBA U19 World Championships.

On Thursday in the adidas Uprising Summer Championship, McDowell-White showed why he's so highly touted. He has very good size for a lead guard, but also possesses good quickness and strength. His floor vision is impressive and he consistently found or made plays for his teammates in both the half court and in transition. He's also a good ball handler with a good feel for the game. "He has great court vision, good size and his IQ is off the charts," one high major college coach that watched him this week told Scout.

McDowell-Whiteis tracking as a high major prospect and has said in the past that he has intentions to play Division-1 basketball. And the gifted guard will have plenty of options. Among the head coaches that watched him and his teammates on Thursday included Rick Barnes, Dana Altman, Lon Kruger, Greg McDermott, Bruce Weber, John Beilein, Kevin Stallings, Craig Neal, Brian Wardle and Mike Dunlap.

Assistants from Notre Dame, Texas A&M, LSU, ASU, Boise State, Louisville, UIC, UCSB, Fresno State, Dayton, Hawaii, Albany, UNLV, St. Mary's, Butler and Wake Forest were also at the game.

article written about McDowel-White regarding Louisville's recruitment of him.

quote:
The University of Louisville basketball staff has one commitment in the Class of 2016 and the Cardinals' are in on a ton of solid prospects for what appears to be two more spots in the class.
Add another name to the list.

William McDowell-White, considered one of the top young players in Australia, confirmed to Cardinal Authority that Louisville is one of the schools that has started to recruit him for the Class of 2016.

"I don't know much about Louisville in general," McDowell-White said. "I do know about their basketball program and all of the success. I know I would like to be a part of Louisville in the future."
McDowell-White, a 6-foot-5 point guard, was first noticed on the U.S. scene by colleges last summer when he was a star the the Adidas Nations event in Long Beach, Calif. He averaged 13.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists a game in the event.

He said Michigan State, Arizona and LSU were among the "other schools that standout" besides Louisville in his recruitment at this point. The Courier-Mail newspaper in Australia said he could be a potential 2016 NBA Draft selection.

I'm googling for information this evening obviously, but it sounds like this kid *might* be at a higher level talent wise than Alex in terms of NBA potential. Caruso has been a very good 4-year college player who certainly at minimum can make good pro money overseas but probably not going to be a pick in the 2016 NBA draft.

The son of three-time Brisbane Lions premiership winner Darryl White, the 17-year-old McDowell-White is currently one of the stars on the Australia Under-19 National Team competing later this week at the Under-19 World Championships in Greece.

One NBA Scout compared him to Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls to the Australian newspaper.

Another article about McDowell-White's family. As mentioned in another one of the articles that I linked above, his father is a former professional Rugby star.

quote:
McDowell-White is the son of AFL football star, Darryl White, who is a triple Premiership winner with the Brisbane Lions, an inductee of the AFLNT Hall of Fame and a member of the AFL Indigenous Team of the Century, "there's a lot of Aboriginal players who played over the last 100 years so getting picked in the final 24 positions out of that mob was a real honour," Darryl says with pride.

William McDowell-White is White's second son (after Darryl Junior). McDowell-White has played basketball since he was five years old. "Dad was the first person to recognise I had a talent for basketball. He was the first one to put a basketball in my hands," says McDowell-White, adding, "I tried playing AFL too, but I kept growing and Dad pushed me more towards basketball, and I just loved basketball better."

I've read enough now at this point that I would be pretty excited if we landed this McDowell-White kid.

http://downtownball.net/2015/08/william-mcdowell-white-game-behind-name/

quote:
It's true: The NBA is living through the golden age of point guards. But so is Australia. Indeed, Mills, Dellavedova and Exum are the headlines but McDowell-White might soon evolve beyond the small print, and into something special.

McDowell-White isn't unique in cobbling together a string of strong performances as a bottom-ager in a major tournament like the FIBA world champs. Heck, where he winds up in three years is far from certain, and the feeling from those who've watched him is that he's somewhere in the middle of the pack.

"He definitely isn't on Ben Simmons' level of talent right now," one NBA scout told Downtown. "I would say Will is in the middle. He could go either way. His decision-making isn't elite yet as it needs to be but he's still only 17."

The "either-way" analogy isn't necessarily damning. In other words: He's a teenager still trying to figure out who he is.

But what he offers could be unique to Australian basketball. He boasts that something "special" that every talent evaluator seeks. He's the rare speedster with the basketball IQ to shift gears, create space and whip defenses into a haze in the open court.

Adelaide 36ers Head Coach Joey Wright compared the 17-year-old's explosiveness to Derrick Rose earlier this year.

"It's a fair comparison in the sense of how fast he is with the ball," agrees Australia's Under 19 Head Coach Adam Caporn.

"It's very hard to say," adds the NBA scout. "Rose is very special, we're talking about an MVP. I know he's not comparing Will to that. He's comparing his style to Derrick's. I can say a little bit as he's great in the open court and he has that ability to change pace, which is special."

Although he sometimes strays into hopeless adventures in the paint, McDowell-White's ability to break down perimeter defenses and manufacture his own tempo when the game drifts on a sombre pace, is nabbing intrigue from major college programs and NBA scouts. Playing the long game can be dangerous but he definitely projects to be in the mould of a true point guard.

quote:
As we look at the years ahead for McDowell-White, it's appropriate looking at exactly where he is right now. He faces the same question that Exum faced last year: Does he become the next exotic, foreign mystery man or does he pursue the traditional college route where you're closer to the furnace? Nobody really has a grasp on the Aussie's next move.

"He's got a big choice to make," says the NBA scout. "He has positional size which translates in the NBA. He has a feel right now, which is very interesting. It's really up to him.

"One, how bad does he really want it and how hard does he want to work for it? And then two, the coaching? Where is he going to go? Is he going to stay in the NBL and play pro against men or is he going to go against guys his own age, and guys who are just as or better athletes? If he holds his own or excels then he has a great chance of playing in the NBA one day."
