BBQ! In Lockhart Sunday. Looking forward to it. It's recommended we bring our own tray. Anyone else ever been?

I've been the last few years. My in-laws live in Lockhart, so it's easy and generally a good time until I get full way too quickly. One of my favorite places every year unfortunately isn't in the picnic, but did sell at the Saturday event. Khoi out of Houston, Vietnamese, Texas BBQ fusion...very good and nice to get a different take.

I would also recommend taking a tray so you can get multiple booths at a time and find a place to go eat it all. However, they changed the rules this year, so not all trays are allowed. Check out the size info they have on their website, I'm pretty sure they banned the larger cafeteria type and foil trays. They also outlawed to go bags and I think coolers. In years past people would load up on everything and then take it all to go.

Review - it was ok. 35 of TMs top 50 but maybe only 3 tents actually had brisket. I get it, much cheaper to serve sausage and beef short ribs to the masses, but disappointed. Some places I really wanted to try had some good finger foods but wanted to sample brisket.

I dont think it's so much about food costs as it is about trying to serve something different or special vs what they normally serve at their restaurants. It would be really boring if everybody was serving the same thing and you tried 40 different samples of brisket, it's not set up to be competition-like where you compare between places. I think you went in with misguided expectations.

I went to the TX Monthly event a couple of years ago and have been to Troubadour Festival here in Aggie park twice and really like the setup. You get to try some crazy/exotic products these guys whip up and it's all so very different than if you visited each of their physical locations. There's a lot more to bbq than just brisket, ribs, and sausage.

This. No one wants to go to an event and eat 35 different briskets. When you get up to the top tiers of bbq, most of these guys are all doing variations of the same method on brisket. Some outstanding bites last weekend.
