What readily available bourbon do you guys recommend for old fashions?

Been on a kick lately but not too well versed in making these at home.

Bulleit is good in an old fashioned and is really available.

Russell's Reserve 10 year.

Fully mature, complex bourbon. Good in cocktails and good neat. Readily available for $30.

Bulleit Rye makes an even better one
Buffalo Trace works well

This is my go to cocktail

I have found that a good bourbon makes a great old fashioned and a great bourbon makes a good old fashioned. Don't use your expensive whiskey and definitely don't use rot gut.

My other advice:
- Drop the orange peel and use good cherries, either luxardo or homemade (amaretto cherries are pretty good in an old fashioned and over vanilla ice cream).
- Use a splash of club soda instead of regular water
- Vary your bitters to vary up the drink
- Infused whiskeys (i.e. 1 earl gray teabag in 1 cup of whiskey for a couple days) can make for an interesting variation

This is a great cocktail that can be fussed with easily and can teach you a lot about flavor profiles and mixology

Rittenhouse Rye is very inexpensive, but works great in most cocktails. The 100 proof stands up well when mixed.

My favorites have already been mentioned:

Bulleit Bourbon and Rye
Rittenhouse is still a steal even though the price is going up
Old Forester Rye

All solid choices

Don't sleep on Old Forester Rye (100 proof).

Absolutely amazing in the various cocktails I've made this year... especially in an Old Fashioned.

Huge fan of Sazarac for an Old Fashioned, Manhattan or a Sazarac.

I like cheaper ryes for mixing, Rittenhouse and Old Overholt are roughly $20 a bottle. Also like Treaty Oaks rye if I have it on hand.

For rye I go Rittenhouse or Old Forester

For bourbon I go Jim beam or WT101

Better advice, keep the orange peel and use your stove to scorch it a bit.

If you're using rye for an old fashioned, try a lemon twist instead of an orange twist.

I use Rittenhouse as my rye, and Bulliet for my bourbon. Both male very good cocktails.

Enough of this, let's talk personal preference on their Old Fashioned recipes, my go to lately has been:

2 oz Bulleit Rye
3 dashes Black Walnut Bitter
0.25 oz simple syrup (I keep my own on hand, cup of water and cup of Demerara sugar)

Stirred with ice and strained over large rock, sometimes I'll add Luxardo cherry and orange slice, but mostly just straight up.

OG 114 holds up well to a melting ice cube ... high proof and affordable.

Brown Sugar Bourbon
Luxardo cherries
Orange peel
Plenty of bitters
Splash water
Large square/round ice cube

This x 100.

That said, I find the glass and ice you use, plus stirring properly to get the right dilution, is the key to a good old fashioned... probably more so than the type of bourbon/rye or exotic flavored bitters.

Centennial reposado tequila

It has the smokiness that you are looking for in an Old Fashion

Thank me later

Also,

One part regular bitters

And one part this :

Muddle one brown sugar cube
With your orange peel

And of course:

I'm a beer drinker, but my social group has been on an Old Fashioned kick. At the liquor store I asked for a good bourbon for mixing them, and they recommended Redemption High Rye Bourbon. It has gotten good reviews.

Wasn't the point of an old fashioned to hide the taste of bad bourbon? Why would you waste good bourbon you could drink neat on an old fashioned?

'Good' bourbon is quite subjective.

Because sometimes a good bourbon makes a great old fashioned.

Sometimes I drink my bourbon neat, sometimes I drink it on a giant ice cube, sometimes I add a splash of water, sometimes more.

I like variety and experimentation and a whiskey has a lot of maneuver room, so get off the high horse

We've had this discussion with friends before - one that swore you could use the worst/cheapest & it wouldn't matter. We did a taste test with a few different bottles. We proved it matters. We typically use Buffalo Trace now but way back before it was non-existent & sat on the shelf with dust @ around $40-50, - EHTSiB made a great one when we wanted to splurge. We still talk about those.

Nothing wrong with a good Oaxacan Old Fashioned. I like mine with Fee Brothers Aztec Chocolate bitters (along with orange bitters). I recommend agave syrup instead of sugar. I like equal parts Tequila and Mezcal ftw.

I made my dad a Manhattan with this and a fresh bottle of anticca. It's night and day compared with the bulleit and old non refrigerated martini Rossi he does it with ! Could've just been the vermouth being different but I'm a big believer in using quality liquor in my cocktails
