For years, a group of us that go camping in Big Bend every year have wondered why you can't get sotol whiskey outside of Mexico. Well, now you can.

Desert Door Sotol, distilled in Driftwood. Try it. Thank me later.

Sotol is not whiskey. It's in the tequila family. No grain was hurt in the making of that spirit.

Desert Door is releasing some barrel aged Sotol now at Total Wine.

Pretty fantastic.

Are these same people wondering why you can't get Coors Beer east of Texas?

The liquor store in Marfa has a pretty good Sotol selection

Tried it. No one was a big fan. The bottle is really pretty, though.

you've been able to get Sotol for a number of years at Specs and Total Wine. Gaia and Hacienda de Chihuahua are both fairly easy to find and about half the price of desert door.

I'm not a tequila fan, but I really like Sotol and prefer the blanco over reposado or anejo.

And Spider is correct Sotol is not whiskey. It is distilled from the Sotol plant, which grows all over the hill country and big bend region, as well as the Chihuahua region of mexico (obviously).

Sotol is more similar to mezcal than traditional tequila with the smoky profile...

A group of friends and I went on a tour of the place in driftwood and then did late lunch/dinner at the salt lick one Sunday last summer. We enjoyed the tour and tastings but it didn't hit my palette and I haven't been back or bought a bottle since then.

Cool looking bottle though.

I tried it yesterday. It's not bad. It's also bottled at 50 proof vs. 40 for the regular sotol they make.
