I am going to make a statement that will not go over well with most, but I am curious if I am the only one in the world that thinks this: barrel aged beers are over done, and gimmicky. Anyone out there agree? Or am I nuts?

I am not a huge fan of bba beers. I'll enjoy them occasionally , especially the semi-whalz, and appreciate them on cold nights, but I tend to stick with well crafted IPA's and DIPA's, sprinkled with sours. Just a little heavy for my tastes to drink often, so I can kind of see where you are coming from.

barrel aged beers have been around forever. The U.S. is just now catching on. All the Belgian styles; I love them. Duchesse, liefman, rodenbach, Petrus, etc. given how long this has been around, this is not a gimmick. This is a part of very old brewing techniques.

Now Americans may very well get credit for bourbon/whisky barrel aged beers. This style I am pretty much indifferent about, and it definitely has become overly trendy. Belgians can still make barrel aged beers that sell for $10-$15 a bomber, while the American counterparts are $15-$30 and up.

I am a much bigger fan of wine barrel aged styles. Not sure if this is an American thing or not. Can't think of any old world wba beers.
