Dr. Jekyll's Beer Lab is the name of the place in Pantego on Park Row. There's another spot in Coppell IIRC. That spot is opening soon if it's not already open.

Driving up to Dallas for the day Saturday. Any beers I can't get down here in Houston that I could pick up without going to far out of the way? Really just going up 45 and back same day

Anyone tried Stone Coffee Milk Stout?

Chris, Deep Ellum Dreamcrusher is legit if you like double IPAs.

Sue smoked porter from Yazoo (Nashville). Awesome, highly rated beer and it is fairly cheap as far as bombers go. I think I paid $5.

BTW in TN you have to go to a liquor store to get anything above ~5% ABV.

Who spends more: you on beer, or your wife on candles?

Well she does buy some expensive ass candles but I have her beat on that front. Now clothes and shoes is a different story.

I'm headed up to Portland Oregon in about two weeks. Can I expect to find Russian River Pliny The Elder with ease? My trip to Colorado was a no go on finding the Pliny.

What are some of Texags favorite brew pubs to visit while in Portland? The only definite I have so far is Deschutes.

See if you can find on tap Boneyard's RPM IPA. One of the best I've had.

MADDUD:

Never easy to guarantee Pliny availability. Check the bottle shops I mention below.

Too many good beer places to mention them all in one post, but here is a decent start:

Downtown/close-in
Breweries/brewpubs:
Deschutes - best overall combo of brew and pub
Cascade - sour specialists if you are in to that
Hair of the Dog - strong ales, really cool selection of old cellared stuff
Pints - in downtown. Haven't been there yet but have heard good things

Bottle shops:
The Beermongers - across street from Apex bar below. Good bottle selection and nice set of rotating taps of rare stuff

Beer bars:
Apex - amazing selection. highly recommend. CASH ONLY.
Bailey's Tap Room - prob best selection of rare/special taps in downtown
Green Dragon (near Cascade brewery) - liked it better before Rogue bought it, but still one of the better beer bars in town.

Further out
Breweries/brewpubs:
Breakside - GABF gold IPA and lots of experimental brews. Recommend their North Portland brew pub rather than their south side production brewery for better Portland atmosphere.
Ecliptic - started by guy who came up with Deschutes Black Butte Porter, Mirror Pond, and Jubleale recipes. Great neighborhood as well - if going here, also try the German bar Prost nearby
Hopworks - organic brewery/brewpub. Good beer and food. Very Portlandia.

Bottle Shops:
Belmont Station - prob most famous bottleshop in town. Has an attached bar with rotating rare beers.
John's Market - enormous bottle selection but not really a place for atmosphere. No on-site drinking.
Imperial Bottle Shop - good but not great. Worth going to if you want to combine with a trip to Salt and Straw or one of the restaurants in the neighborhood.

Beer bars:
Horse Brass - highly recommend this English pub. They alternate between RRBC Blind Pig and Pliny the Elder on tap. Tons of other taps with good stuff.
Saraveza
Roscoe's - a bit further out, but great rotating tap selection and nice little neighborhood.

Dave-

Boneyard starts canning this year. I'd be happy to help a brother out.

I think they are going to explode once they hit store shelves, their IPAs are as good as they come. Sample size of 1, but I had an opportunity to blind taste test their Notorious IIPA vs Pliny the younger and preferred the Notorious.

Corndog,
Does De Guarde distribute in Portland or are they all brewery only?

Kegs only, even those are fairly rare.

Some San Antonio brewers:

Ranger Creek Small Batch #9. This is in my top 3 of their small batch beers so far. Pretty good. And once it's gone it's gone.

Also Freetail brewery just released beers to the store yesterday. I know the owner has been fighting to sell his beers outside his brewery for years. I bought some already but haven't tasted yet so I don't know how well he transitioned to bottling.

Had the Freetail Witicus bomber last night. $5.85 for double wit. 8% maybe. Very smooth.

Wade, which one did you get? I may pick up some Octoberfiesta and Soul Doubt. I grabbed REK's Honey Pils yesterday, looking forward to trying it tonight.

I'm going to pick up some Soul Doubt. I don't remember thinking it was all that great at the brewpub, but have heard that it may actually be better canned.

Also picked up a bomber of Freetail Original yesterday. It was decent.

Ran across Rogue John-John ale at HEB today..... Dead guy ale aged in whiskey barrels..... $11 per bomber so I decided to give it a try

I agree. They were bursting out the seams when we went in March. I can only imagine how they're going to handle the demand for cans. I brought back a growler of RPM to Texas and polished it off in a few days. So good!

I got a bomber of the original which I'm going to drink saturday during the games and a six pack cans of bat outta hell (sp?) It's a lager.

I probably drink one of those tonight and give a mini review later. By review: "suck" "not suck"

They brew some good beer so I hope he gets some of that out there. I really liked the smoked rubio they do ever now and then but I think I'm the minority on that one.

Thanks for all the tips, Corndog. I'm taking your list with me and hope to make as many stops as I can. I'll be there for 6 days so I'll see what kind of damage I can do.

hah. Many states think it's crazy you can't buy liquor on Sunday or past 9pm any day.

I'd rather have longer liquor store hours 7 days a week then be able to buy beer in grocery store. Selection is way better at liquor store anyway. Grocery store is for groceries.

For the longest time i thought no liquor on sundays was a law in every state!

I agree i would rather be able to buy booze 24/7
