I've been pretty happy with most of the Blue Owl sour mash beers. Wife brought me some Van Dayum and it's tasty.

That one's definitely solid. Finally found it in Houston at Specs. I'm assuming they're self distributing.

Sending my package (huh huh huh) today. Wish I woulda been able to send it before Bmac because now it'll be like the Rolling Stones opening for Wierd Al Yankovich.

Anybody had Mama Tried from Brazos Valley Brewing? I was pretty pleased with both it and Seven Spanish Angels.

Gonna cook up some ribeyes tonight and was thinking about wine but decided I wanted some good beer instead. Trying to think what style would go best. Any suggestions?

Surprising they've never won a GABF medal (I assume they enter every year)


I was searching the winner list, and came across this:
Silver - Samuel Houston's Austin Lager - Waterloo Brewing Co. - Austin - TX - Vienna Lager - 1995

That's pretty funny.

Interesting too see the progression of winners in TX. In the beginning, it's all 'lagers', 'malt liquors', even a category 'ale', and it's pabst, celis, pete's, lone star and whoever G. Heileman Brewing Co. is dominating the first 15 years or so, winning 50 of the first 64 medals in TX.

Then Saint Arnold, winning the only medals from houston from 1999 to 2014 (21 in all), until Karbach showed up in 2015. That is quite the reign they had.

I think seven Spanish angels is fantastic. I was about to say that's by far my favorite bvb beer but looking at my untappd, that's the only one I've had. Maybe I'd had some in the past pre-untappd

BVB's Mama Tried is a pretty darn good IPA. Citra hops, I believe.

Heileman, is the former brewer of Old Style out of LaCrosse, WI. They bought up a ton of smaller regional brewers in the 70s and 80s including Lone Star. At one point in time they were the 4th largest brewer in America. They eventually got bought and are now owned by Pabst.

My great grandfather worked at the Heileman brewery in LaCrosse about 100 years ago. Seemed like a good place for a German immigrant to work, I guess.

Sorry, I meant Specs. I know they've done that before. I was surprised when everybody was talking about Deep Ellum finally coming to Houston as I'd been getting it at Specs for a while at that point. Turns out It had never occurred to me that Specs was he only place that had it.

If anyone goes out to JK today and ends up with an extra Grim Harvest let me know. I love their second run fruit beers.

Yes. We did. Not as many beers on tap as usual, but still a fun time

Spotted ABW blood orange IPA in clear lake today.

I love that beer

If I can get the wife to watch the kids for a bit, then maybe I can meet y'all there some day soon.

They're all pretty good. That isnt the whaley Fundamental Forces, just Fundamental Observation. In all the blind vanilla stout tastings weve done its consistently finished high.

Personally, I like Ground State the best but I like coffee stouts a lot.

Space Trace was good and so was Leche Boracho. Byzantine Vision is infected.
