Because of the lack of leadership evinced by A&M's president and administration and faculty in the "remove Sully" crisis, I am no longer sending any money to A&M's academic or athletic side. It wasn't much and won't be missed, but it was a fair amount for a retired teacher.

I used to send money to the CCA, but several years ago there was a thread on Texags questioning how the funds were being used.

I don't want to insinuate anything or ruffle anyone's feathers, but does anyone have any input to that concern?

Is the CCA a worthy recipient of donations?

most of their programs seems to go into direct support of the cadets from what I've seen.

they provide PT gear and Camelbaks to the fish and support a fair amount of cadet programs:

My son is an incoming fish and I just discovered the CCA. They are going to get most of if not all of my TAMU donations from here on in.

I guess I'm a bum but just made my first donations to the CCA.

Only for Qs though.

I emailed Tom Pool at this site to see what options there are to donate through the Foundation.

I would not donate unless you know exactly where it's going.

Yes.

Absolutely.

Good Ags in the CCA. Care deeply about the Fightin' Texas Aggie Cadet Corps.

There is no other organization at Texas A&M that I now support with my financial resources, other than the CCA.

I say this as a combat vet overseas with no affiliation other than as a donor who loves Texas A&M and 'Merica.

Here is the latest publicly-available 990 filing (2018):

https://pdf.guidestar.org/PDF_Images/2018/752/482/2018-752482454-11106025-9.pdf

At a quick glance:

Out of $1.7 million in contributions, about $1.2 million was spent. Of that, $500,000 went to salaries and payroll taxes (increase of $140k over PY), $63k went to office expenses, $17k went to an accounting service, 50k went to bank and credit card fees, $20k went to IT.

$100k went to Corps athletic teams, $50k went to the Hall of Honor (which I admittedly know little about), $50k went to FOW, and the bulk of other expenses ($372k) are uncategorized. That's a lot of overhead to reinvest $500 or $600k into the Corps of Cadets.

I appreciate you finding that for us.

I know nothing about what the normal amounts for such things would be.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether the organization seems topheavy in terms of salaries, expenses, amount given to the Corps vs. amount kept by the organization? I just don't have any sense of how to judge this information.

Roughly 50% of what the CCA spent going for salaries, taxes and support services seems awfully high. Most large charities, for example, are run with around 20% spent on overhead costs, right?

Good afternoon. My name is Jill Bright, Membership and Development Director for the CCA. I am more than happy to share additional information related to our funding and sponsorship of more than 50 Cadet programs. In addition to funding these programs, our staff coordinates and executes all planning and logistics for some of the most time-honored and memorable events during a Cadet's time in the Corps such as Senior Dining Out, Ol' Army Boot Dance and FOW check-in. In continuing efforts to meet the needs of Cadets, we operate an on-campus store on the Quad where Cadets can conveniently purchase uniform items and equipment. Additionally, we facilitate and host events for former Cadets such as the Corps Hall of Honor Gala, Rally to the Guidons annual march-in and assist with the coordination of outfit reunions. All active members also receive an annual Corps Calendar of Events as well as a subscription to the Guidon magazine which serves to connect all class years with relevant content of interest to our membership and highlight current Corps accomplishments. We are committed to keeping the Corps strong by helping to recruit high quality young men and women, retaining them via the enhanced Corps experience provided through our sponsored programs and ensuring the Corps remains the Keepers of the Spirit. We are proud to be celebrating our 27th year of taking care of Cadets. I am happy to answer any specific questions you might have, please call 877-892-4222.

I don't really have a good enough perspective to state an educated opinion on this.

The market value of the executive director should be based on what he brings to the table, and what it would take to replace the position. In this case, there are few people who both have the knowledge and expertise to do the job, while having institutional knowledge of the Corps of Cadets and the necessary connections to be successful.

But that's just one person's salary. There seems to be a lot more expenses in there for an organization that size. Many comparable organizations are primarily run by volunteers with maybe some help to do the books, as they just aren't large enough to pay those kinds of salaries. In CCA's case they're doing both - running with a paid staff and a small total budget, so admin expenses carve a lot out.

It seems like they put a lot into athletics (I'm sure that's their sponsorship of the Corps Marksmanship Unit and maybe some others), but it does seem like a really inefficient way to fund Corps programs.

Personal opinion: More focus should be put on actual veterans that are going to school with the GI Bill because these are the guys that can have a good influence on not only the Corps but the overall student body by their experience and leadership.

The lockdown has affected a lot of them that were full time students and not working.
