I am fine tuning an end of year project for my on level English III kids.

They are defining their own "American Dream" and how they can make it happen. There are three prongs students can pursue. One is traditional two or four year post secondary programs, one is going right into the workforce, and the third is opting to join the miliary.

I have a fair number who take that option, but I am stumped about what they need to do for the project.

I need suggestions.

Others take a career inventory test, research a chosen career with the bureau of labor statistics, write at leasts one college admissions essay, or for job seekers, a resume and employment cover letter.

What can my miliary seeks do that is a similar amount of work and has at least some writing element?

Research job duties in various branches that would interest them. Compare and contrast a chosen job between different branches as well as other pro's vs con's of different branches.

Consider post service career options depending on what job they focus on.

Prepare for and if possible take the ASVAB and understand what scores allow them to get offered what positions.

Understand contract commitments and if available signing bonuses and those additional commitments that are usually tied to those bonuses. Compare those between branches and jobs.

What is day to day life like for junior enlisted, do you live on board a ship or in a barracks, what is that like. Do you eat in a dinning facility? What does a typical work day look like? This will vary widely between job and duty station even within branches, but is a good starting place to understand what life is going to be like day to day.

Is there an official "practice" asvab. I know some of the online testing services have one, but I don't know how accurate it is?

- have them research a branch (Army, Navy, AF etc....)
- choose an MOS with in that branch, and why they want to do it.
- benefits to serving (GI Bill, skills for future career...)
- places they can get stationed

Plan a meeting with them at 6:00 am. Tell them they need to show up at 4:00 am for it with everything they own.

At 6:45 am, walk outside and tell them they need to go wait in the hallway outside your room.

At 10:30, walk out into the hallway and tell them they need to take all their stuff back to their houses and then come back.

At 12:30, tell them they only have 10 minutes to eat lunch because they need to be back at your classroom.

At 3:30, bring them in your office and have them sign a sheet of paper with nothing written on it, then send them back in the hallway.

At 5:00, tell them they can't go home until they've swept the entire school and picked up all the cigarette butts in the parking lot.

You forgot the part where you tell them everyone has to compete an online course before they go home, you can only use one of the 5 computers In the classroom and can't go home or to your barracks rooms to complete it and bring in the certificate the next day

If they are defining their own American dream and considering how military service might fit, it may be useful to examine the military pay and benefits. If a goal is for students to display qualitative thinking, then it could be useful to consider the impact of the retirement pension, GI Bill, Hazelwood Act, Tricare medical benefits, housing allowance, preferential income tax treatment, etc.

Lots of good students may instinctively write off military service because other career options appear more lucrative, but much of that perceived income gap goes away for some jobs once you consider the military benefits. The GI Bill alone is probably worth around $90,000 at a Texas public university. That benefit has helped countless young men and women reach their American dream.

We had a speaker today who was actually a Marine but was speaking on behalf of military options in general. Most of our students had no idea how many benefits above just the pay scale exist.

Better yet - at 4:45 - announce that you have lost something that is very important, but that nobody can go home until they find the thing that you have lost. Call their parents and tell them they will be staying the night and will not return home until they find the lost item.
