Buddy of mine lives in SW Utah and was hearing and feeling window-shaking booms during the day. His neighbors said they were consistent with "Red Flag exercises", which were very common during both Gulf Wars. The neighbors seem to think that this is the military ramping up for bombing exercises, and that it's sonic booms from missiles being dropped onto military targets in Nevada. Anybody familiar with this, or are his neighbors ill-informed? Also, where, over the continental U.S., are military planes typically flown at supersonic speeds?

USAF holds several Red Flags a year out of Nellis AFB, outside of Las Vegas. The ranges for Red Flag are in central Nevada, though. Utah has ranges, as well, though they are further north (west of SLC/Provo).

Can't rule out Aurora or aliens, though.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like nearby drills are being done. Not a big believer in the UFO thing, besides, don't they usually come out at night, anyway?

They have been heard all the way up to Twin Falls Idaho. But these booms have been going on for a few years. The Air Force says it is not them. Some super secret Skunk Works plane maybe?

Quote:

TWIN FALLS - For the last several years, and some say longer, the Magic Valley has been under some sort of siege.
"I would describe it as something similar to a sonic boom," said one resident.
"There's an audible boom and then it shakes," said another.
"It's like this weird errrrrrrr," described yet another.
From Buhl to Burley these "booms" have been best described as a bunch of audible, and feelable, sensations.

Quote:

It's usually felt as well. It's felt just as much as it's heard," he said.
Weiser recently realized how far-reaching these feelings went after the event on November 13.
"We asked our audience, and the phones went crazy and said, 'Yeah, we heard this!'" says Weiser.

Quote:

"If it is the Air Force Base, I mean, I feel like that's just as odd as, you know, no explanation," said Skroback. "Because then you wonder, 'What are they doing?'"
So is it the Air Force? And what are they doing? And have they gotten calls about them?
"Not typically," says Byron Schmidt, the airspace manager for Mountain Home Air Force Base. He, and science, says their airspace is too far from Twin Falls to really have any effect.
"For them to hear a sonic boom, our aircraft would practically have to fly over the top of Twin Falls," said Schmidt.
Besides, he says, the reports appear to be far too random to be attributed to military aircraft.

The Navy/Marine Fighter Weapons School is located at Fallon, Nv, outside Reno.
They use ranges NE of there. I'm sure Super sonic flights occur.
Navy's Electronic Warfare Range also located there.

As for the USAF N/NW of Nellis, much Supersonic flights.

Those Sonic booms don't carry to places as far away as Twin Falls.

Super Sonic flights have been occurring regularly, in both places, for atleast 50 years.
