The Virginian-Pilot reported Monday that the Navy will begin preparing the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge and the landing ship USS Oak Hill for operations to support Harvey rescue efforts. In 2012, the Navy dispatched three ships, the USS Wasp, USS San Antonio and USS Carter Hall, to assist with Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

On Tuesday, a Marine Corps official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss plans that had yet to be made public, said that the Marines were moving to help in Texas. Reserve units with inflatable boats, 7-ton trucks and Huey helicopters would all be involved in the relief efforts, the official said. Tracked amphibious assault vehicles were also helping in Galveston, Tex while Marine units were looking to move aboard the Kearsarge with landing craft and helicopters before the ship deployed to the Gulf.

I'd be surprised if they took their weapons ashore at all. In 1991 a large SPMAGTF from CLNC went to south Florida for disaster relief after hurricane Andrew and they left their weapons in the armory. They were building tent cities on forklift pallets, preparing chow, and cleaning porta johns. They were not allowed to do any patrolling or deterrence of looting (despite the fact that the Posse Commitatus Act does not explicitly mention the Marine Corps).

The Marine Amtracs are based in Galveston. Their compound is down by the ferry and USACE headquarters.

It's looking as if the Trac companies in Tampa and Jacksonville are about to get some disaster relief action as well as the Truck company in Orlando.

Did the same thing in mid 90's sent boats and divers to Houston...the civdiv back then was poorly organized, it appears much more efficient now.
