Former Navy Corpsman Zachary Butler '17 has saved more than $1,800 in textbook costs through renting books from the Aggie Shields lending library.

Aggie Shields was founded in 2012 to raise money for Aggie ring scholarships for veterans, but it wasn't long until its leaders discovered that textbooks were the major cost weighing down student veterans. After realizing this, the organization created a textbook lending library.

Housed within the Veteran Resource and Support Center, the library is open and free to all student veterans at Texas A&M.

In the fall 2016 semester, the lending library helped veterans and their dependents save more than $36,000 on textbooks.

"Had Aggie Shields not paid for my books, I would be nearly $1,800 in credit card debt," said Butler. "I owe a lot of gratitude to the students who run the organization, as well as to the generous people who make it possible for veterans such as myself to pursue our dreams of attending college."
