Krause's is fun.
Faust is good.

Just had Gruene Door last night and it was really good. A bit pricey and i know you mentioned staying out of Gruene, but it's off to the side a bit and not really in the Gristmill area that gets so much traffic.

Muck & Fuss is good food & beer.

Agree with toshiba about Huisache

Buttermilk is good, but it gets packed fast with long waits (if you're talking about weekends)

Muck & Fuss is probably the actual best restaurant in town.

The River House is in Gruene but no one seems to know about it - great for dinner and brunch.

Myron's is an average steakhouse at best, you can do better at home on your grill.

Alpine Haus for German.

The Downtown Social or Aboveground for pizza

North Street in San Marcos for mediterranean and beer

La Cosecha for Mexican, get the red pepper margarita

Buttermilk is inexplicably packed with a line every weekend for breakfast and I can't figure out why. It's all right, better than Denny's but not tremendously so. Go to the other side of 35 for Avery's Kitchen instead. Food is at least as good and you won't have to wait in the parking lot for an hour.

If Avery's happens to be packed, walk 50ft to Double Schotts in the same complex. Decent enough food and some really good cocktails.

Second the Gruene Door. Better than the big places down the street. 188 South is relatively new but pretty good Italian downtown. If you don't mind a drive, Gennaro's in Startzville, out by Canyon Lake is really good and really affordable unless you get one of the specials. I think that's how they make their money back.

I agree with every recommendation listed although we never go (or even drive through) Grne, especially when the circus is in town (tourists between Memorial Day and Labor Day). We have never tried La Consecha. Our favorite Mexican was Mamacita's which was purchased by McAdoo's (one of our favorites) and turned into La Consecha.

I agree with all of the above and have a few more suggestions:

Fork & Spoon - good breakfast & lunch place.

Pho NB

Freiheit is another good place for burgers.

A-tan Sushi

Las Fontanas- Mexican food - Fajitas Tarascas are amazing.

Texas Bistro- it's a Bistro so Burgers to steaks

River City Cafe - comfort food, my mother in law loves this place. I think it's pretty good.

Callahan's Pub has the best pizza in town in my opinion.

Inferno's pizza is good too but close to Gruene so best for the off season.

Double Dave's is in Creekside as well.

A few more that haven't been mentioned

Willie B's is the best burger in town
Cravings is the best lunch/sandwich place
The Palm Cafe is my favorite Mexican
Los Fontanas is another good nicer Mexican joint

Myrons is inconsistent on food quality. Service is always great but you pay for it. When they're on, they are really good and are better than what most people could ever do at home. When they're not, they're just ok. Main thing I don't like about them is they don't vary their menu at all, ever, and it's a small menu.

That said they're still in my top 4 for NB:

1) Sylver Spoon (try the filet mignon- unbeatable)
2) Myrons
3) Mcadoos
4) Muck n Fuss

Most overrated food but good atmosphere:
Freiheit (and I've been going there since early 2000s before it was anything but a backroad hole in the wall - go on a Friday or Saturday night)

River City as mentioned above is nothing special from a food standpoint but is cheap and down home American food with a nice atmosphere. Wife and I enjoy going there with or without kids. Sometimes they have an acoustic act playing. That's the best time to go.

La Cosecha is our "go to" for Mexican. Margaritas pack a punch!

The downtowner has great cocktails and food. Sitting at the bar talking with the bartenders is always a great way to spend the evening.

We went to Guadalupe Brewing Company on Friday night and had a great time. They have a few different options on the property and had live music going. There is a pizza place (we grabbed a pizza - pretty good) and a little building that does other things - we didn't go to it, but I'm assuming it is things like burgers, fries, etc (again, not sure). A few different places to grab beers as well.

All in all, it was a fun little environment for being out in the middle of nowhere by the the quarry.

We were there around 5:30 and only stayed for an hour - no idea if it gets crowded or crazy, but it was pretty low key while we were there.

Texas Bistro- it's a Bistro so Burgers to steaks

Both great.

Haven't seen these two mentioned:

Noli's Vite on Common for Italian. It's actually an Albanian family who prepared food in the restaurants in Italy

Mozi's is in Gruene but great food and great atmosphere.

Nole Vita - Italian
River House - farm to table
Fontana's - Mexican ($3 thurs margs)
Myrons - avg steakhouse
Landa Park Station - hamburgers
Muck n Fuss - burgers
Tin Too - burgers
Gruene Door - above average American

I despise McAdoos. Their stuffed flounder was served to my party via talapia. One of the guys in the party is a professional saltwater fisherman. He asked for the manager to explain. After several conversations she finally admitted to running out of flounder and comped our entire dinner. The next time my wife and I went our portions were significantly different than before. The management has really drive quality down. Owner owns
La Cosecha as well, but wife runs that one. It seems to be much better organized and quality

Krause's can be fun, but the food is average. The service is terrible. Another management issue. They cannot figure out the logistics of customer to staff ratio. Pre-covid

188 South - decent basic Italian and pizza. Same founder of Krause
