Ursuline Academy

Dormitory erected in 1866, Photo taken in 1933.

One of San Antonio’s first schools, and the oldest all-female in the state, Ursuline was first established in 1851 on the banks of the San Antonio River. The school eventually moved out to the suburbs in the 60s and the original structures passed into the hands of the San Antonio Conservation Society who eventually sold it to the Southwest School of Art & Craft.

Do these image sizes work out alright, or are they too large?

Great job, love seeing these pictures, and yes the sizing is fine. Loved especially seeing a picture of the Schultze Store, my father grew up in the one story next door on the right. Loved hearing stories about how life was on Goliad St. back in the early 1900's.

You wouldn't happen to know the house number would you?

I ran across a huge number of those houses online. I later realized that Water/Goliad/Victoria St were all demolished to make way for Hemisfair and most of those house were documented before demolition.

It's the James Sweeney House(117 Goliad St.) located next door to the Schultze house, this link below provides some more info which includes the address for the Schultze house as 115 Goliad St. My great grandfather Sweeney built the house for my grandparents.

Note the north face of the clock tower - there is no clock face - no one lived North of Ursuline at the time. The other three sides have a clock face.

Mazieres Store and House. (1854) Apparently parking lots where in much demand. The three building to it's right are still there, minus the extensive porch on the front. (on the s.w. corner of Durango and S. Alamo.)

Three photos of the Dreiss House, Ida and John Dress Koch from the photo of 129 Barrera owned this home in what in now Dreiss Hill just east of downtown. Let me tell you, that area has some of the best views in town. This home was built in 1892 at 316 S. Pine in front of her parents house which I'm still tying to locate. The middle photo is from Google Street View and in the six months since then the house has been demolished. Someone was once proud to call this place home... I can't tell you how pissed I was to find this place gone when I went out to take pictures. It was the photo that spurred me on to do all of this.

edit: nevermind. The house on pine street that burned down appears to be a different home than the one posted above

is there anything you can post with regard to the Woodlawn area? I drive through there often and wish I could have seen so many of those homes when they were first built.

Surprisingly, I have not found much out that way.

I have Westmoreland College (Old Trinity University after that) and the Peacock Academy to do which are in that area but absolutely nothing residential...at this point. I'll look deeper as I really want to get something from there too.

I've got a book on the history of Monte Vista that has some pictures of a few of the houses off Woodlawn from back in the 20s. I'll try to post a few of those pictures this weekend.
