What's the current going rate for replacing a fence per linear ft? Standard 6' picket fence, pressure treated posts set in concrete with only two 2x4 rails. I just quoted something that works out to about $35/linear ft

I paid that for 3 2x4 rails plus a beveled rot board all cedar.

Where are you located? I early 2023 when I still lived in Austin, I got quoted $40/ft which I thought was outrageous.

This is in suburbs of Houston

That's really high! In Bryan/College Station it's in the mid $20s per foot for that same fence with 3 rails and includes the removal of the old fence.

1. if this is a forever house, then non-corrosive metal pipes in 42"d concrete fiber/steel reinf. (30-36"d in ideal soil Aggieland has none).
2. rule-of-thumb costs guides that have never been exact but tell us when a good deal comes along

= Aggieland $30-41
3. accept no bids/quote from anyone less than 5-star reviews Google/BBB/etc.
Ten words or less ... a goal unattainable

That's a little high. Around Houston you can probably find lower 30's

This summer we paid just shy of $30 but with steel posts.

Edit to add this was just west of Austin.

Steel posts. Don't go cheap.

I received a couple of quotes recently. Both were #2 or better 6' Western Red Cedar pickets with three rails and a 6" rot board. The first quote came out about $37.74/LF which I believe included demo. The second was from Texas Fence was $27.50/LF. For a smaller section (<than 50 LF), the quotes were much higher not surprisingly.

For the specs on this fence build I feel like that is high. For your own benefit and the next homeowner, go with 2-3/8" galvanized posts. Also, I would do three rails on 6' and not just 2 rails, one lower to the ground level, middle, and higher tail towards the top. On 8' I do 4 rails.

I need to get into fencing. Seems like there's a lot of labor money in those LF costs

I have it on pretty decent authority that fence company owners do very well.

Most of that's not an option. In an HOA where steel posts and such would require MC approval.

Ultimately we've decided to just build it ourselves (neighbor and I).

Who did you use, and were you happy, if you don't mind my asking.

I just used Right Fence in Woodlands. They were $27 for new 6' cedar picket, treated posts and rails, 2x6 treated rot board. Tear down and haul off of existing was $3.

Knocked out 350' in one day with 2 gates.

Danny was my rep. Turned bid around in 1 day and scheduled about a week out once I approved the quote.

Were they using fast set concrete ?
54 plus post in 1 day is booking it

Yes. It was a great job. Spread the dirt from the holes etc.

Highly recommend.

Got a quote from them today and it's mid $40's for the same fence you built. 6" rot board, cedar pickets (2-sided), and a cap. I'm gonna challenge them on the price tomorrow but I was a bit surprised. I've only got 100' but it's still an 8-hour job so I don't know that it should be that kind of premium. Appreciate your recommendation.

Price per foot is not always as simple and straight forward as folks assume. We build a lot of fences in BCS. True, going rate for tear out and installation of 6' pine fence with wood posts is $26-27/pf.

HOWEVER: it can be more or less. Many variables to consider.
- How many gates?
- Any trees/roots/shrubs/vines/flower beds to work around or remove?
- Hauling off the old fence or just stacking it on the curb for bulk pickup?

Also, comparing price per foot to someone who had 300+ feet done to a 100-foot section is not going to be the same. You can get a much better price per foot on 300+ feet since the contractor can get more done with the same labor.

Going from wood posts to steel posts adds roughly $6/pf in material cost alone between the posts, brackets, and caps.

I'll also say, not all fences are created equal. I've been underbid by JV contractors/landscapers doing 20-22/pf and only using 2 rails or adding 1/2" spacing between pickets (which then becomes 1" spacing when the pickets dry out).

If you work your contractor down in price, they're probably just going to cut cost somewhere before they sacrifice margin. The best way to save would be get some neighbors in with you and go for more footage which can save you on the labor side.

Do your research, and in the end, don't just go for the cheapest bid. I doubt these quotes that are varying +/- 30% are apples to apples comparison.

Wow! That's a significant difference.
Here's what I was quoted. With cap and tear out included it was $29/ft plus gates.

Could be the economies of scale along with the two-sided accounting for some of that difference. Regardless, I've requested a couple of additional quotes.

Have you gotten a quote from Lone Star Fence? The company who did my steel fence said they are the best value in town for wood fencing.

I just paid $25/ft for one side of my fence that's 68' with 6" cedar pickets, 3 2x4 treated crossbars and 4x4 treated posts set in concrete (7' on center) including tear down and haul away. However, him and his son don't want to finish the other two sides 62' and 53' too hot. Everyone else is quoting $30/ft for same fencing to complete the job.
