Excavated limestone - what can you use it for (or not)?

We're building in Comal county and have a sloped lot on which we had the builder do a significant cut. We've got two huge piles of excavated limestone. Some is basically powder and some are big stones.

We learned that you can't backfill the septic area with it based on new rules in Comal. We do plan to use it for grading. I assume you have to add a layer of top soil to be able to sod or plant anything?

Anyone have experience with this? We're meeting with a landscaper later in April to get their input but I appreciate the collective wisdom here on Forum 61.

Aggieland it is used for paths, drives and larger stones as landscape bed perimeters.
With enough surplus a mason could create a mailbox and other such items.

Given photos, other ideas might arise from others here.

Beware using it for fill, especially the larger rocks. Voids will be present & the finer material will settle in over the years leading to an unlevel yard that is an absolute chore to make right.

I recommend getting the larger pieces hauled off (unless decorative enough to use as vaughn mentioned) and only use the smaller 3-4" sized stuff for fill. Water the heck out of it to fill the voids.
Beware that crushed limestone is highly alkaline & will have an impact on any planting you do in that area.

Agree with Apache, before you put down expensive top soil and sod, get the voids filled as much as possible with something not so expensive. You will be surprised how much interstitial area will become available over several years and that will affect not only level surface but watering.

Backfill with the rock and then fill in with smaller rock. This will solve the need to sod anything and you won't have to water. No need to waste water artificially supporting grass.

I hear ya but the HOA has requirements. We're going to do artificial turf in the back.

Don't forget that they can't reject your landscaping plan to use drought-resistant plants or turf by State law.

Grass is up to you, but I would design around it as much as possible in a new build.
