I know I'm crazy, but I have a corner in the kitchen that is wasted.

The dog's cozy cave is there and there are a couple pictures hanging on the walls.

I'd like to build cabinets in that spot.

The front of the cabinets will be the hypotenuse of the triangle.

I'm a frame and Cornish carpenter and I've done plenty of inside trim, baseboards and crown molding.

Anyone with experience / suggestions on where to start and if I can get my hands on some plans?

I found a pre-built corner cab at Home Depot but it didn't have to FIT between existing cabinets ....

seems to me any cabinet shop would send out a measurement man and build to suit w/o you having to sleep on the sofa.

Assuming better ideas to follow this .....

Everything I find online assumes that the cabinets are going to the left and right.

The face of the cabinets will be the hypotenuse of the triangle. If I can find some plans I can build it myself.

Cabinetmaker here...the likelihood of finding plans for basically a "custom" cabinet will be slim. Most "stock' corner cabinets are 36"x36" across the backs, 34 1/2" high. You may be able to find plans if you are at those dimensions. But there is no ONE way to build cabinets, custom or stock.

Sounds like you are looking to build a corner cabinet that will be square on the two back (perpendicular) walls to meet the two walls in the corner, but the front face will be a diagonal. Sort of a square with a 135 degree 'clipped' corner in the front. Is that the case?

Are you looking to match existing cabinets exactly?

If that is the type of cabinet you are trying to fit, construction is a bit odd due to cutting mitered edges, fitting and hinging the door, etc. But it sounds like you have had variety of experience and likely well suited to do the job.

Planning it is key. Drawing the top view out full scale on a piece of ply or sheetrock would probably help start the process. Draw the outside dimensions, include the thickness of the walls, how deep it will be on the sides, that will give you the diagonal msmt., if a face frame, likely 3/4"? That will give you how deep your side walls need to be less the face frame and thickness of your backs (1/4" or 1/2"?)...I could go on, but it may get confusing...

Let me know if you need more assistance, and maybe I can walk you through a few details.

The plan is to match the existing cabinets for design and then paint the existing cabinets to match the new ones I'm building.

So basically I plan to buy matching doors / hinges.

Because it's in the corner I envision the bottom section only with enough depth for a single drawer in the middle and three doors.

The top will have two maybe three doors.

I have power in that wall so I will move the plug to above counter height and maybe hard wired under cabinet lighting.

From the door trim to the corner it's 36"

From the same corner to the opening to the living room it's 54".

So leaving two inches gap between door trim and front of bottom cabinet that's 34" for the base and perpendicular lengths of the triangle and 48.08" for the hypotenuse. As you can probably imagine the single drawer will have to be pretty short / shallow.

I appreciate any and all advice.

If you know what you want (and have the tools to do it) - then design it in SketchUp (free online version) then get to it!

Learning to draw out your ideas in something like SketchUp will make the fab part really easy for the most part and less frustrating to boot. I've built tons of stuff that way - built-ins, trailer, smoker, desks/tables, cabinets, tools, etc.
