I plan to put some gravel, pavers, and then decorative rock on the side of our home.

Regarding pavers: I've seen really good prices on 24" x 24" concrete/fabricated ones from big box stores that aren't too expensive.

However, I've seen a lot of neighbors and others have landscaping done where they are using wider rectangular pieces. I know some places pour them into molds and it is just concrete, but others I've seen dropped off from the trailer.

Anyone know what it is most people are likely using? The real limestone ones are $100+ each.

I've installed both concrete & stone pavers. I try to steer people towards poured concrete steps if possible.
Thoughts:

Concrete can be pressure washed (Limestone will often flake or pit when hit with a pressure washer, especially when it ages)

Concrete is reinforced, whereas stone can crack especially on the corners.

You can stain the concrete if you want color

Stone will flake over time with freeze/thaw cycle.

There's a size limitation with stone & none w/concrete. Anything over a 2'x4'-ish stone paver will need to be 3"+ thick and very hard to handle, not to mention expensive.

The precast concrete pavers from Home Depot aren't reinforced & there are limits on size/shape but they are useful in some situations.

If you do go LImestone, get the Lueders variety. Lueders is a limestone type that is more dense than standard limestone & has less flaking issues. It is more expensive than regular white/cream limestone but comes in colors such as buff, charcoal or chocolate brown. The limestone should be 2-1/4" thick if doing 2'x4' slabs, set it on a good sand base.

Good luck!

Really appreciate the feedback.

Have you ever heard of CastOhn pavers? They are manufactured and sold a big supply yard in the Austin-area.

I'm looking at pavers as well. What do those bad boys run?

The basic ones mentioned from big-box stores that are 2' x 2' are < $20 each.

The castOhn manufactured are around $45-$65. They get up to $100-$120 for larger ones.

Limestone should go by weight I think.

That's helpful, thanks

I assume that's the ~2x2 as well?

I could get behind paying a bit more for a measurably better product.

I called the local supply yard to get a recheck...

Castohn 1x3 - $50, 2x2 - $65, 2x3 $99
1 1/4 Limestone Lueder $75 for a 2x4 (this sounds suss)
2 1/4 Limestone Lueder $85-$100 for a 2x4.

I'll have to go in person and check them out. I'm with you though, better to get something that will hold up a bit. However, I do have something like 50-60 feet in total I'm wanting to work with, so it definitely adds up.

Don't use 1-1/4", they'll break before you pull them off the pallet.
Castohn is a good product, we just don't use them much

do you have any other suggestions for brands that you would suggest in the pre-cast world?

We recently bought two 24x48 1 1/4 for ~90. I promptly cracked one on installation. Then bought two 2 1/4 24x48 for ~150. Both from Whittlesy's in Round Rock.

Thanks! !!!

Looks like I'll have a few trips to make in my Tacoma!

I hauled quite a few half yards of rock. Hilarious how much my Taco is leaning back.

Thoughts here? I've got lots of vertical room to work with because the dirt slopes up a bit to where my side gate is and also a bit up to back. I was going to potentially put crushed granite all down on existing stone steps.

Then weed fabric, then new path steps, and finally fill in with a 1/2" decorative rock.

Edit...maybe I will bring those out in the middle too. I'm definitely removing the ones on the edge.
