My backyard got fried last summer and I need to resod. It's full of weeds right now and I plan to resod later this spring.

I'm assuming I should spray everything and kill it prior to resoding but what should I use to kill everything off?

Roundup. And then till it depending on size and desire for hard manual labor.

Roundup. Rough up the top with some raking and/or a super light/shallow tilling, but don't go nuts with tilling because the air pockets created by heavier tilling will cause the sod to dry out more quickly, plus I think it tends to settle a bit unevenly.

We kill with Roundup & then scalp with the weedeater. Ideally wait a few days & then hit any straggler areas that start to pop back up with Roundup. Then top off with 1/2" of good compost blend to level everything off.

I'm not a believer in the necessity of tilling. Just makes more work & stirs up a ton of weeds.

What makes you think you need to resod. You might be amazed what killing the weeds and fertilizing will do for your remaining grass.
Before I resodded, I would kill all the broadleafs first - Weed-B-Gone in a premixed hose-end sprayer from HD - assuming you have bermuda. Then kill/remove the grassy weeds that are left. Start fertilizing weekly with Ammonium sulfate alternated with urea once nighttime temps get to the mid to upper 50s consistently. Give it a month and see what your remaining grass does and see if you can tolerate the time to get completely covered. Even if you do need to put down some sod, it will be considerably less.

I like TMfrisco's comments. Grass comes back and you will not be adding more clay to your yard in the new sod squares.

After treating the weeds add compost or compost enriched soil to the yard every once in a while to build better soil. I prefer adding 1/2 layer of compost or 1/4 compost enriched soil once a year. You will be amazed at the soil that washes away in heavy rain over the years.

I just assume I need to resod because there is very little left. But I can give it a try.

It's St Augustine so weed b gone won't work?

St Augustine? Girl, you don't need ANYTHING. Just basic weed and fertilization treatment (follow Randy lemon schedule). Water and MOW MOW MOW. MOW religiously.

St Augustine that's healthy will choke everything out.

Do you have enough sunlight is the question? In that case, sod ain't gonna do sheeit.

Look for the one that says "For St. Augustine". Some of the Weed B Gones can be harmful to St. Augustine.

I'm gonna give it a good effort to try and restore before I go the resod route. Still skeptical just with how little there is left but I'm gonna give it a valiant effort.
