Retrimming the garage door opening and was wondering if the center bracket is strictly there to prevent sagging or are they under any stress from the torsion springs themselves. If I unbolt it from the wall to put the new trim up, are the springs going to start to uncoil? Picture below for the bracket I am referencing. This is not my actual garage.

Yes, and it can be dangerous.

100% you have to unload the spring before taking that bracket off the wall. Or it will unload itself in about 1/4 sec in your hands and face.

As Ryan said, dont do it.

Thanks for the heads up. Was already planning on having a garage door company come by and do it all so that everything lines back up correctly but just wanted to make sure those in the know did say that it was a simple DIY. Will save it for the professionals.
