The builder is wanting to put the shower head and shower mixer valve on opposite walls. My initial raise is wtf. His reasoning is that you can turn on the shower without getting wet.

I haven't seen many new builds, but I've never seen this done. Thoughts?

I'd say this is fairly common in new builds I've seen for the exact reason your builder mentioned.

Just looking at that picture, it makes sense. Most people, myself included, turn on the shower, then decloth, etc. while the shower warms up, even if water gets hot pretty quickly like mine. If it were under the shower head you'd have to fully walk into the shower, if it's near the shower door on the opposite wall, you just reach in.

Cheap and easy to do if plumbing with PEX.

I, too, have seen it in a number of new builds. put it right there where you can reach it when opening the door.

If you have a large garden tub with a surrounding deck you can also relocate the valves near the edge where you can reach without stretching over the tub.

Or upgrade to the Moen 4 outlet system and control via an app. Gets rid of the mixer all together.


I remodeled my master bath using it.

Thanks yall.

This builder has left A LOOOOT to be desired so I am taking most of his suggestions with a grain of salt. Or at least double checking EVERYTHING.

In this case the builder is right. Having the valve on the opposite wall closest to the door was in the top 3 requirements from my wife.

Builder is right on this one. You are correct to ask because when a sub says this is how it is always done it is usually the way they want to do it.

Nah, you install that Moen controller in an accessible location. I installed mine behind the door in the rear off the room which is the toilet closet. Ended up hanging a piece of art over the access hole to hide the controller.

The controller has some filters that need to be cleaned every once in a while as well.

I've done this before in multiple homes I've built for customers for the same reasons your builder mentioned it. If it is weird to you, you can always move the shower head and soap niche to the opposite side of the shower so it is all together.

That shower needs a bench.

Also, swing the door from the other direction and move that small1ft piece of glass to the other side too. You won't be able to reach the valve from the door.

So all the time you spend saving not turning a handle, you spend cleaning a filter? Glad you like it, but this is where smart stuff seems dumb/not worth it. You still have to have your by you or you have some device listening to your shower sex. I'm good.

You don't need the phone, it is just added convenience. There is a control panel on the wall you press to turn on and off, select if you want all zones on or just the rain head or body jets, etc. The filters are changed once a year if that so isn't a huge time investment. The filters are the little square beige items above the main cutoffs.

Glad you don't like it and prefer the normal style. Just showing options.

It's not designed to only be in a wall. It can go in the attic, basement, under a sink, etc. I chose a wall because I didn't want to get up in the attic and I didn't have enough space under the sink since it was a floating vanity.
