This is our forever home and we have an area between the detached garage and the house we need to replace the fence. We would like to go with a black metal fence but think we want a steel vs iron? What are some pros and cons. This area is only about 30' long but I would need a gate as well.

My thoughts would be aluminum. Maybe even look into getting the post and rails powder coated? Never rust and never replace?

Get a commercial grade powder coated wrought iron fence & make sure they set the posts 24" deep & use plenty of concrete. Make sure they are doing good welds on 3 sides when they attach the panels to the posts. (Some companies will do only one weld & caulk/paint the rest)
You will need to maintain the fence & repaint periodically especially on the welds.

Like many things, proper construction is as (if not more) important to longevity as good materials.
Be sure to tell your contractor your level of expectations on construction.

I vote for powder coated aluminum. It's what I went with. Very happy with the product.

Any chance you have a photo of your fence?

So, I didn't get their fencing product, but I got their cladding product for the siding of an addition on a home that I remodeled, and a well house. The material would be the same, but I think the way the pieces connect would be different based on how you want it. The distributors were super helpful when we were going through the process. My subs had never worked with the material before, and the distributors offered to fly in from Denver to go over everything with them. In the end, they had some instructional videos on their website that took care of everything.
