I know you get the one year from the factory. So what's the opinion on here. Should a purchaser keep with the extended factory or just get a box store warranty like the ones from Lowe's ? Either way I will have to buy the extended.

I guess or me it depends on the appliance and how I fee that day. I bought one for my Kenmore refrogerator, and it's paid for itself. On others not so much. It's about of a crap shoot. Sometimes I do, sometimesI don't.

As a purchaser I never do but I buy cheaper stuff. However quite a few times through work I've seen the homeowner come out ahead with getting the extended warranty but mainly on just the bigger fridges and or ovens but the lower end brands.

You'll find cheap appliances like Roper and Hotpoint won't need warranty work anyway. It may be cheap but it's hands down more reliable and long lasting than any midrange or high end appliance. Plus there is nothing on it you can't repair yourself on the floor in less than an hour.

I bought a dryer in September that has already been looked at but it is still under factory warranty. The thing runs greats and does it's job. The problem is it started making horribly loud noises. The field tech came out and it's just metal framing and exhaust fines rattling and vibrating. Should've kept my old kenmores.

I worked at Lowe's as an appliance sales specialist during college. The managers always told us to push to sell the extended warranty to the customer because "it's 100% profit to the store."

I worked inside lawn and garden. Managers always told us "Uh...just show up on time." My co workers didn't set a very high bar.

Just bought a fridge from Costco.

Buy with a Costco credit card and you get 4% back and a 4-year warranty free from Costco.

I can also vouch for that. Retention is terrible, and they were just glad to see someone show up.

I'm torn on this. I am beyond pissed at lg still. Our fridge went out after 8 years, it was the compressor. The compressor has a 10 year warranty but it was still going to cost $1,200 to repair. Did some research and lg is in the middle of a class action lawsuit for their compressors. I spoke to multiple repair shops and everyone said the compressor I'd be getting installed would be even worse than the original and likely not last 5 years. So we bought new.

My dad has ge appliances and has the extended warranty through Sears. His appliances have been ****, and it's been hell for him but the warranty has paid for itself. When he has issues he's on the phone for hours being passed from person to person, told appointments are weeks to months out, etc. It's like they're making him work for it and since he doesn't give up they cave in and pay for the repair.

We bought our replacement fridge at Lowe's and went ahead and got the warranty through them. It has other perks, like half off filters, percentage back when the warranty ends if you didn't have a claim, etc. Probably shouldn't have done it but oh well. I was so pissed at the time I really didn't want to buy a new fridge, the thing crap out after a couple years, and again be faced with a $1k repair or a new fridge.

That's because Lowe's isn't carrying the risk of claims. There is another company taking that risk. Lowe's just collects a commission. Doesn't mean insurance (extended warranty) is a bad idea per se.

Extended warranties are a huge profit center. Profitable for the store who sales them and enough margin leftover to payout claims and still turn a tidy profit for the warranty provider / underwriter. One of the only reasons BestBuy still exists was/is due to their extended warranty sells - they would otherwise have gone BK.

A certain number of people will reference that "the warranty really paid off for me...". True, and certain number of people will come home from Vegas with more than they arrived with. But they don't build those flashy casinos by sending people home with cash. And they do not train the sales clerks to push the extended warranty if it was a good deal for the consumer (which inherently means its a bad deal for the retailer).
