Needing help getting rid of patchy spots of crabgrass, and other grassy weeds in St. Augustine. Any suggestions on what to use.

When we first moved into our home in 2018, the grass was weak and allowed so many weeds. I told my wife that we just needed to get the st Augustine healthy and It would take care of the rest. She laughed and one day put down weed and feed while I was gone and nuked the backyard.

It didn't matter because we redid it all and sodded with Augustine-Palmetto, but the front we've just kept after with watering, manual aeration, and fertilizer/turkey compost.

I Can see a need for pre-emergents in January/feb as it starts to ramp up in water but temps are still cool.

Follow the pre-emergent and fertilizer schedule. The St. Augustine should take care of the rest.

If you really want to, you can treat the spots with something that won't hurt the lawn, but I look at it as more of a marathon.

As mentioned above - I just provide San Augustine what it needs (organic fertilizer, water, top dressing of compost every now and then); and the San Augustine does the rest. If you have a particularly bad area, may need to do a little manual removal.

I don't use any herbicides as I believe they do more harm than good.

I follow the Nitro-Phos schedule on their website. It pretty much correlates with Randy Lemon's suggestions which makes sense with him being an endorser. We've followed this schedule for the past year and have really seen a difference. The previous owners did not have any sort of fertilizer regimen and we considered bringing in new sod to the backyard, however, we've been able to avoid that expense and the St. Augustine has really flourished.
