I've been doing more wood butchering in the garage lately, and my little 4 gal / 2 hp shop vac can't keep up. I'm looking for something to use with a cyclone trap for sawdust, etc.

I didn't post this on Outdoors because I don't want to spend $2500 on a wall mount dust collection system.

One of the Rigid 5hp jobbers plus a dust deputy or a cyclone lid is what I see recommended most on woodworking forums. I have a 4hp vac that I just hook up to my saw directly when I try and do some minimal collection efforts.

What's a cyclone trap or dust deputy? What are situations where they work well?

It's a chamber you put in between the hose and the shop vac that collects dust and debris before or gets to the vacuum itself. Keeps the filter clean and maintains suction longer.

Thanks for the recs, all.

This.

I have the Rigid 5hp 16 gallon and it really sucks.

Get the Dust Deputy and mount it to the top of a paint bucket:

Get this 6hp Rigid Shop Vac:

Note that this shop vac has hose accessory holders on each of the feet. So you can put PVC in there and build a platform above your Shop Vac to hold your dust deputy and you can wheel it around on the Rigid's wheels. Most shop vacs don't have the accessory holders in all four corners like this.

Yup, there's a reason why I see these at every job site.

Ordered the Home Depot Dustopper after watching some reviews online. Minimal performance difference vs the Oneida, and I really like the lower profile.

Going to HD tonight to make sure they have that Ridgid vac with the 4 accessory posts to make the platform. Saw a YouTube video about that exact same method.

Here's other types of dust collectors. Some wall mounted ones that aren't the Uber crazy huge ones, and a few that are. Probably too late,l if you went the other route. The large hose just means fewer jams due to wood chips.

For a W/D vac, always go Ridgid.

Be sure to invest in some hearing protection. With both a tool AND a vac going, it will be very loud.
