Thanks for the input... Do you have a range the price ought to be in your eyes and could you elaborate on why you don't like Lennox and what brand you prefer??
I paid $5,500 fully-installed for a 3.5 Ton Goodman SEER 16 single stage condenser with Gas Furnace, evaporator coil, new air plenum and a new duct run to a front bedroom. Added a 10-year labor warranty for $1,000 in top of the 10-year parts...total $6,500 in a 2,200 sq ft home.
Goodman is manufactured here in Houston and parts replacements are readily available to local contractors. Although not as sexy as Trane or Carrier, I've had the system for a year-and-a-half now with absolutely no issues.
If you're not interested in upping your efficiency (i.e. your utility bill is already acceptable), there really is no reason to go to a two stage or variable speed unit to achieve a higher SEER. I would stick with the proven technology that is easier to maintenance.
Do you have to change refrigerants? Either flushing the lines or replacing them could play a factor.
I paid $13,250 for a Coleman 5 speed variable 5 ton compressor and a variable speed blower. This included flushing the lines. No duct work. I did not shop around so while I do think I overpaid some I trusted the contractor. This was a new system so their crew went to the distributor to practice the day before and then the distributor rep personally came over to check the installation and got the Honeywell local rep to make sure the settings were proper.
I would be glad to get you a quote. We are a Trane Comfort Specialist dealer. My office number is 713-466-7555 (ask for Ryan or Jim) my mobile is 832-347-0807 - Jim Wolf

$1100-$1900 per ton installed depending on location, difficulty of install, brand and quality of the install
If you can hold out Til Dec/Jan you will get a better price.
Every mfg (major) has had 2 price increases this year. The Centerpoint rebates will be ending very soon (I am surprised they aren't done with already) so I disagree on waiting til Dec/Jan for better pricing. Every mfg. has a price increase on the equipment each year and it is typically in the Dec/Jan period some in Feb.
Steel prices change and the price of the equipment changes with it. Right now with the rebates from Trane and from Centerpoint on qualifying equipment you can get up to $1500 off.

How much for the above install with Trane or American Standard equipment 14 SEER ?
Eh.. A/C systems are made of the same parts from mostly the same sources, but due to the supply chain of Trane we just prefer not to deal with them much at this time. Too many headaches dealing with more than a few supply houses -only so many hours in the day.
We try to avoid all 'contractor' type headaches as much as possible and that means streamlining all processes as we grow. We train our guys daily/weekly on the High Efficiency Inverter systems in which we can install for often the in the same 'ball park' price wise, as many quote for 14-16 Seer single stage. A lot of it due to the volume of those systems we're now moving and our processes internally as a company we've been developing.
So we figure let the million A/C guys in Texas compete on the brand arguments, and source their equipment from x amount of places and deal with x amount of headaches.
We're just going to become increasingly faster & more efficient at 1. Making A/C Systems run Cleaner + More Efficient and 2. Be the absolute Fastest + Cleanest & Most Efficient at R-22 Replacements
Check out this awesome Inverter System training we had last week

Be aware of a few facts before you make a decision. Fact, President Trump has just sign an EPA mandate to rescind the R22 ban. However, Units that use 410A are going to be phased out due to EPA regulations they are causing more problems with climate change than thought. So if you are getting a 410A unit, figure it is going to be ban in a few year. R22 has now dropped in price as a result of the band being lifted. I would check and see if you can find a dry shipped R22 unit from a company and go that route. The next few years for the ac industry is going to be a lot of changes. I would call Absolute Comfort Air and they will tell you the truth. FYI the new refrigerant for the coming AC systems is going to be propane based. Thus you will also be dealing with the Texas Railroad Commission for an additional charge to your pocket book. Be informed before you make a decision.
I would also check with Mike Waters and Artic Air in Katy. He is known on this forum and will give you an honest second opinion. Let me also add that Lennox has been involved in a lot of lawsuits regarding their ac coils. Google lennox coils and you will see.

How is going to propane going to make the homeowner have to answer to the TRRC? How would it be any different than the millions of people who have about 5 gallons (or more) of propane in their backyard right now?
And for the record, we should have been with propane since nearly the beginning; people were too afraid of it catching fire so we started halogenating it. Hence, R-12, R-22, R-134a, etc.
Either NH3 or C3 would be the best home refrigerant.
I just had two (one 4 -ton, one 3.5 ton) 18 SEER two-Stage systems installed this past weekend by A&M mechanical, and was very impressed with the workmanship. I would highly recommend them.
